Lin Dan's "broken" racket grip...
Ok. so we can probably conclude that Lin Dan's new grip isn't an accident. he has this grip during the HK Open:
and this one from the All England:
given that he has wrapped his grip this way in more than one occasion, we can only conclude that it was done deliberately and not because the Chinese team equipment warehouse ran out of towel grip.
so does anybody want to guess why he chooses such a strange grip?

I heard its because he wants to teach himself to not hold the racket up near the end of the grip

It's probably to force himself into using the full length of the grip since he used to always hold his racket about halfway up the grip, no matter which shot he played.

Yep, I recall LD saying something to this effect in a Chinese newspaper.

what is wrong with holding the racquet half way up? I know if you hold it a tthe butt, you have a longer distance, but look at peter gade. whenever i see him, wheter smashing or clearing, he has his grip half way up. i found this change in grip very interesting, since it looks so naked and ugly

holding the grip near the bottom gives you more leverage wch gives you more power at the swatting end of the racket. In physics i think its called the "moment arm". On the other hand, gripping closer to the racket head might give you more control or faster reaction times since you dont have to backswing too much.

LD's method of forcing the grip change is pretty drastic, but he must have his reasons for forcing it.

You're basically right but i think its probably the coaches want him to do it rather than him himself

Well in that case, mia audina only needs about 6/7cm of grip tape - she only needs to wrap round once!

its a trade off though, feel for comfort.
ever since i started using only one layer of overgrip on the wood, i've turned part of my thumb, index and middle finger into hamburger.

Why do players hold the racquet half way up? or i mean has that always been the regular standard? I always played with my index finger up on the grip while i hold the bottom of the grip.
Ive been teaching myself when and where to move my hand up the grip for more quickness on short smashes and such. And also been teaching myself not to put my index finger straight up on the grip and pretty much grip the whole grip with my hand.

The correct way to hold a badminton racket, is to grip it apporximately half way up, and holding it like a hammer. If you hold it at the bottom you get hardly any control, if you hold it at the top you get no power.

With respect to doubles, respectfully disagree. When you are at the net, you should hold the racket higher for better control and faster head speed. In the backcourt, if the opponents lift, you should hold the racket near the bottom for max power. When in doubt, or return of serve, hold middle. This was the first thing I was taught.

My coach taught me to ALWAYS hold the racquet at the very bottom in singles, because you need the extra reach it gives. In doubles, you can choke up because you will need more speed.
BTW you got email ^
