Get to the shuttle early and hit a round-the-head forehand smash instead.

Practice, practice, practice.... Techniques doesn't matter at all. It will come automatically with practice as you find your most comfortabe stance and wrist action. I never got coached or saw and videos, but have an awesome backhand smash due to six years of practice. I am also 6ft tall, which helps in smashing.
