BADMINTON gets another major boost with Kimoni, a fledgling Japanese company involved in manufacturing equipment and other gear for the sport, organizing a nationwide series starting next week covering the hot spots of the local shuttlecock boom.

The Kimoni Badminton Tour 2006 will visit eight key cities for a series of eliminations starting Feb. 18-19 at the Smash Power Badminton Club in Pampanga. The top finishers will advance to the Battle of Champions at the Market! Market! at The Fort in July.

Response to the Tour has been overwhelming, according to Billy Lim-It, chief executive officer of Kimoni Philippines. He said this may even go beyond the company’s vision of providing a high-caliber competition for players in all skill levels.

“We believe that this Tour will become a legitimate ground for a talent search which will open doors to Filipino players who dream of making it big in the game,” said Lim-It.

The tourney features competition in men’s doubles,
ladies doubles and mixed doubles. Members or former mainstays of the national training pool and varsity players cannot join.

While there is an age requirement of at least 21 years old, organizers have included a junior division for the 16-20 age bracket.

The Pampanga leg gets going after the completion of the leveling over the weekend.

The rest of the eliminations schedule: March 4-5 Shuttlers’ Haven Badminton Courts, Bacolod City; March 18-19 4Play Badminton Court, Davao City; April 8-9 Tacloban Extreme Badminton Club, Tacloban City; April 22-23 Butuan City; May 13-14 Portside Badminton Plaza, Mandaue City; May 27-28 Shuttle Zone Badminton Court, Kidapawan City; June 3-4 Cagayan de Oro; July 1,2, 8 and 9 Olympic Badminton Club, Quezon City.
