MALAYSIA'S chances of advancing to the Uber Cup finals took a crucial blow when they lost 2-3 to Taiwan in the opening match of the Asia-Oceania qualifying rounds in Jaipur, India yesterday.

Malaysia's option to split top pair Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui to secure two points from the doubles back-fired as only one point was secured instead.

Pei Tty partnered Ooi Sock Ai but lost to Taiwan's No 1 combination Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin 21-10, 21-10 while the other scratch pair of Eei Hui-Fong Chew Yen beat Chou Chia Chi-Ku Pei Ting 21-17, 21-19.

In the singles, former world junior champion Cheng Shao Chieh gave Taiwan the expected lead when she defeated Wong Mew Choo 22-20, 15-21, 21-11.

The second singles also went to Taiwan when Huang Chia Hsin beat Julia Wong 21-18, 21-18 while Norsyahliza Baharum was Malaysia's saving grace when she took the third singles beating Chiu Yi Ju 16-21, 21-11, 21-18.

Malaysia must now beat Indonesia to have any chance of securing the top two spots in Group A to qualify for the final rounds in Japan in May.

Malaysia will also play Iran today and are likely to secure an easy win.

In the Thomas Cup qualifiers, Malaysia thrashed Pakistan and should book their berth in the final round when they beat Nepal today.

Lee Chong Wei defeated Ali Wajid 21-15, 21-9 in the first singles while Hafiz Hashim secured a 21-7, 21-4 win over Zeeshan Omar in the second singles.

Wong Choong Hann defeated Ahsan Qamar 21-13, 21-11 in the third singles.

Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat beat Azam Rizwan-Hussain Shabbar 21-9, 21-16 in the first doubles while Lin Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan defeated Rana Rizwan-Ali Mirza 21-8, 21-5 in the second singles.

The Thomas Cup squad will be utilising the tournament to get used to the 21-point system as they hardly face any challenges in their qualifying campaign.
