Female badminton duo take on men in Glasgow
    ELSPETH BURNSIDE

SUSAN Hughes and Yuan Wemyss, Scotland's top two female badminton players, are set to break new ground this weekend by taking part in the men's singles at the Glasgow Badminton Championships at the Cockburn Centre.

Hughes, the Scottish champion from Glasgow, and Dumfries-based Wemyss, last year's Bank of Scotland Scottish International champion, are both ranked in the top 30 in the world and will be medal contenders at next month's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

"I'm really looking forward to taking on the men," said 23-year-old Hughes. "The great thing is that for a change nothing is really expected of me.

"Facing world-class women players, as I did last week in the Uber Cup in Greece last week, and then entering events like this weekend will help me a lot in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games."

Wemyss added: "This is a good opportunity for me and a new kind of challenge."

:D two canucks cheering on the highlanders. Isn't Anna Rice playing? She probably has a better chance than either of the scottish ladies.

Looking at some results I guess she isn't as far as I thought she would be by now so turns out they're all pretty equal (Hughes beating Rice 11-1 13-10 in the Welsh Int.).
[Only 1 canuck I see, my mistake  Then again Vermont is close enough]

Just happened to be stuck behind a couple computerhogging2006nationalmedalists ;) @ the swiss open last year so been following them a bit more.
["stuck" as in waiting for a pc][ :p getting more off-topic by the minute]

And to be on-topic: playing against men is definitely a good thing if you're already ahead of the rest in your country. Just like "our" Vanessa Atkinson is currently dominating womens squash might be partly because she's playing in the men's competition.

How you are very sure that XXF always play against LD? I don't think so... But I think XXF may play against the Level 2 MS.

Because if LD always play with Female player, then his level will drop. That's true.... if we always play with those level lower than us, our level will also drop.

It's probably more accurate for you to say that "the females I play with are lousy and the males I know are all very good"

we cannot compare male vs female athlete. The body build totally different, and the power is the big factor.
The playing style between male and female totally different as well.

That's why in this world, all sports are separate Male & Female.
