what to do in doubles when they play me at the back side to side, but i keep dropping and smashing, they can return my smashes 70 percent of hte time and drops obviously 90 percent of the time. due to these quick returns sometimes i dont get enough time to bounce back to the other side to get the bird, especially if they drive it. what else can i do instead of drop or smash. i usually drop to the corners and smash down the alleys, but i have been thinking to smash and drop to the center since they play sides, i tell my partner to get up close to the net so right after i drop and they lift he's rite there to pounce on it. is this correct what else should i do, obviously there is also the clear, but in my head clearing is sketchy since my partner cannot return smashes very well the opponent picks this up, and thy place all the smashes at him.

I'm only an intermediate player, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But if you're having trouble with them and they're returning every single shot of yours, I would suggest playing your shots to one side only during a particular rally. That way, with luck, you can tire that person out. This will work especially well if one of these players is weaker than the other one.

An attacking clear, if I remember right, and in case you didn't know, is one of those clears with a lower angle than a defensive one. This gives the opponent less time to line up his/her shot.

Unless I misunderstood what you meant, that'd be dangerous, as it requires cross-court shots.
A poorly executed, or an expected cross-court drop or smash = easy down the line attacking drive.

An attacking clear down the line is a better option, it may force your opponent out of position.

they would play sides when they clear/ put it to the back of court to me....so if i put to the alleys both of them are right there...so that is why i say mayb put in middle to confuse them or clear then they would obviously clear back or smash or drop....

Drive the shuttle instead. Aim for a headshot. I know I'm sounding a bit cruel but hey who cares. All we want to know is the BOOM HEADSHOT!!!

That way you counteract their clears and lifts and if they can't get a good lift from the drive usually you can go for the kill. If not just try to play faster drives and push them into making mistakes.

I reckon what you are doing now is correct. Just smash harder and drop tighter. If you were able to do that, your opponent should not be able to return 70% of your smash or 90% of your drops. Even if they were returned, if you smashed or dropped in the right place, it will be returned to your side and not to the other side.

i notiiced that they drop almost onto there back one hand when they return it so some times i can get it back at them and they have no time to get it again....and drive their clear? that sounds a bit odd

Easy answer: keep smashing! You can basically kill your opponents with an average of 1 in 3 smashes. That's a very good record. Better than hitting a bunch of others shots and running around, getting all tired. :)

tutu h's, references are good! You should have a read. When you smashed at the right place and time, you would minimise the angle of return and hence it will be more difficult for your opponents to make you run from side to side. Conversely, you could smash, smash and smash. :p

Pfft. No one listens to my advice anymore. Either that or people hate doing drives.

Oh man, Calfunz should really kick his ass if he's on the outside of the court looking in:D. There's no excuse to escape to the outside even if you're facing international quality smash... gotta bite the bullet:p.
