Default Asian Badminton Championships 2006 Main Draw

Ok guys...the draws are out! No top Chinese or Korean players in the main draw, with Indonesian pairs as the top seed in Men's and Mixed Doubles. Indonesia and Malaysia are out in full force in the men's discipline.

I will just analyze the draws in MS, MD, and XD.

    Starting with XD:
    TOP HALF:
    Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir (1)
Gan Teik Chai/Fong Chew Yen (5-8)
    Songpol Anukritayawan/Kulchala Vorawichitchaikul (3-4)
    Devin Lahardi/Vita Marissa (5-8)

-- no problem for the World Champion, a straight route to the final, facing possibly Sudket/Saralee. I am more interested in the performances of Devin/Vita..their first performance since the Chinese Taipei Open about 4 months ago! They should breeze through the first round (facing a qualifier) and then possibly Zhang Wei/Yu Yang. Any match involving Chinese women player is not easy, esp with the experienced Zhang Wei as a partner. I hope they will beat the Chinese and face possibly Thai's second pair in the QF. If they could yet again win, a match against their compatriot beckons in the semi-final.

    BOTTOM HALF:
    Mohd Rizal/Endang Nursugianti (5-8)
    Hendri Kurniawan Saputra/Li Yujia (3-4)
    Anggun Nugroho/Yunita Tetty (5-8)
    Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thungthongkam (2)

-- again, a first performance for Rizal/Endang in more than half a year. They missed the CT Open end of last year because Rizal broke his finger in a soccer match! They shouldn't have a problem with their opening round matches (against unknown Macau pair and probably a Vietnamese pair last seen competing in the CT Open and SEA Games end of last year). They will then face the newly-crowned CG bronze-medallist Saputra/Li in the QF. The last quarter is probably the most interesting. Anggun/Yunita has the toughest draw, facing Tsai Chia-Hsin/Cheng Wen-Hsing in the second round and then Sudket/Saralee in the QF. Sudket/Saralee themselves have an interesting first-round match against the Asuncion brother-sister combo in the first round.

PREDICTION: Nova/Butet vs Sudket/Saralee -- Nova/Butet to win the first title of the year.
PERSONAL HOPE: The 2 other Indo pairs (Devin/Vita and Rizal/Endang) to reach the semi-final.

    MEN'S DOUBLES

    TOP HALF:
    Candra Wijaya/Sigit Budiarto (1)
Mohd Tazari Mohd Fairuzizuan/Lin Woon Fui (5-8)
Chan Chong Ming/Koo Kien Keat (3-4)
    Tadashi Ohtsuka/Keita Masuda (5-8)

-- Candra/Sigit is still not in top form, esp since Sigit has just recovered from his injuries. This is also their second match in 2006, after losing in the first round of AE 2006 to Choong/Lee. Luckily, they should have no problem in the opening 2 rounds, facing a Chinese Taipei pair and possibly an Indian pair. The real test will come in the QF where they should face Malaysian's fastly improving pair of Mohd Tazari/Lin. The current record favours the Indonesian and it could be a thriller!

The second quarter pits the newly crowned CG champion CCM/KKK against Thai's no 1 pair of Prapakamol/Ngernsrisuk as early as the second round. The question is: can CCM/KKK still have the stamina to compete in the ABC after an exhausting schedule in the CG? The other seeded pair, Ohtsuka/Masuda will also have an interesting second round match against yet another new Korean combo of Hwang Ji Man/Jung Tae Tuk.

Are the Koreans done with the constant reshuffling of doubles player? They have gone from Jung Jae Sung/Lee Jae Jin and Hwang Ji Man/Han Sang Hoon to now Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae, Hwang Ji Man/Jung Tae Kuk, and Lee Jae Jin/Han Sang Hoon.

    BOTTOM HALF:
Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah (5-8)
    Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan (3-4)
Gan Teik Chai/Abdul Latif Mohd Zakry (5-8)
    Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto (2)

-- as with the mixed doubles, the bottom half is more interesting and expect some surprises as early as the first 2 rounds. Starting with the second seeded Luluk/Alvent, they face tricky ties against the Japanese pair Sakamoto/Ikeda and possibly the Indian pair Sanave/Kumar in the second round. They shouldn't have a problem with these 2 pairs though, especially after a pretty impressive performance in the qualifying campaign of the Thomas Cup last mth. Their opponent in the quarter-final should be either Gan/Abdul Latif or Tan Bin Shen/Chew Choon Eng, although Tan/Chew have to qualify first. Luluk/Alvent will be looking to avenge their defeat in the AE 2006 to Gan/Abdul Latif and this time, I think they should be looking at least at a final spot in the ABC.

The third quarter is filled with danger for every seeded pair. Choong/Lee have to face off with Hendra Gunawan/Joko Riyadi as early as in the first round. I am pretty surprised but happy to see their name inside, especially after Bola, Kompas and even Jawa Pos have reported that only the 3 top pairs are sent to ABC. With CTF still has to recover from jet lag and fatigue after competing in the CG and LWW still not fully recovered from injury, I place my bet on the upcoming Indo pair to prevail in 3 sets! The next opponent will be either Gong Weijie/Zhang Wei or Chai Tsia-Hsin/Hu Chung-Hsyan. Lastly, the third-seeded Markis/Hendra will have a tricky tie against Lee Jae Jin/Han Sang Hoon in the second round. They need to reach at least the semi-finals or even better defend their crown....but chance is pretty slim.

PREDICTION: Candra Wijaya/Sigit Budiarto vs Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto (Luluk/Alvent to win their first title in 1.5 years)
PERSONAL HOPE: Hendra/Joko to reach the quarter-final and Markis/Hendra to reach semi-final.

    MEN'S SINGLES
    QUARTER 1:
    Lee Chong Wei (1)
    Chetan Anand (9-16)
    Ng Wei (5-8)
    Lee Tsuen Tseng (9-16)

-- LCW has had an impressive haul over the past week, winning golds in both the CG team and individual events, untroubled. His first tough tie will be against Chetan Anand, who also has his own share of CG medals (winning the bronze medals in both team and individual event as well). But, Lee should not have a problem. Meanwhile, the Indian has to face Kennevic Asuncion in the first round and possible Markus Wijanu in the second round. I will be thrilled if Markus can beat the experienced Indian Ng Wei has a tricky tie against Hendra Wijaya in the first round and a relatively easier tie in the second round. Then, he will possibly meet Lee Tsuen Tseng or Li Yu in the third round.

PREDICTION: No question about it, LCW to maintain his excellent form and he will possibly win another tournament here!

    QUARTER 2:
    Kuan Beng Hong (3-4)
    Park Sung Hwan (9-16)
    Sony Dwi Kuncoro (5-8)
    Yeoh Kay Bin (9-16)

-- a pretty tough draw for Sony, but, a good showing here should bolster his confidence for the Thomas Cup. He faces an unknown player in the first round and should face Sho Sasaki in the second round. A tricky tie...but he should prevail. Then, he will face Yeoh Kay Bin who has an untroubled route to Round 3. Meanwhile, Kuan Beng Hong should also breeze through to Round 3 where he will face Park Sung Hwan. Park has to beat Krishnan Yogendran first in the second round. The winner between Park and Kuan will meet Sony for an interesting QF match.
On paper, Sony should have a higher chance against Kuan.

PREDICTION: Sony or KBH to qualify from this quarter. Sony has the unenviable task of beating possibly 4 Malaysians if he is to win the tournament, starting from Yeoh Kay Bin, Kuan Beng Hong, Lee Chong Wei, and Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

    QUARTER 3:
    Chen Yu (9-16)
    Sairul Amar Ayob (5-8)
    Chan Yan Kit (9-16)
    Wong Choong Han (3-4)

-- WCH has a pretty untroubled route to the semi-final, if he still has the stamina to compete in the ABC. Remember that he had played the most number of matches (17) in the CG . Chan Yan Kit should also not have a problem reaching at least Round 3. Meanwhile, Sairul has an interesting match against Arvind Bhat in the first round. An Indonesian player, Alamsyah, will face off with Kendrick Lee in the first round. The winner will face Chen Yu in the second round. Chen Yu has a good showing in the China Masters and he should beat both Kendrick and Sairul.

PREDICTION: WCH to qualify, otherwise Chen Yu to take advantage of Wong's fatigue.

    QUARTER 4:
    Shoji Sato (9/16)
    Boonsak Ponsana (5-8)
    Simon Santoso (9/16)
    Mohd Hafiz Hashim (2)

-- Hafiz should have plenty of stamina after being left out of the CG, and he will be desperate for a good showing ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals. He will breeze through to Round 3 where he will face possibly Simon. However, Simon himself yet again has the bad luck of drawing the Chinese youngster Lu Yi in the first round. If he wins, he will face possibly Thomas Kurian in the second round. The odds are not on him and again, he will reach at most Round 3. Both Sato and Boonsak also draw possibly the best opponent in the first round: Nguyen Tien Minh and Anup Sridhar. We have seen how the Vietnamese trouble Taufik and LCW in the SEA Games and Thomas Cup qualifying. The Indian also has a decent showing in the CG, winning the bronze in the team event and reaching the quarter-final of the individual event (losing to LCW in 15-21, 18-21).

PREDICTION: Hafiz to storm through the semi-final and possibly the final.

FINAL PREDICTION: LCW vs Mohd Hafiz Hashim (Lee to win yet again!)
PERSONAL HOPE: Markus Wijanu to reach the third round, Simon to reach quarter-final, and Sony to reach semi-final (or retain his title....but slim chance)
