What do you guys think? Is/was Ashaway MicroLegend and its XL counterpart a fad?

It's really expensive and really doesn't offer much that Yonex strings can't. Must be those red and blue stripes xD.

Seriously though, give me your thoughts.

    They might be more durable.

Ashaway ML and ML-XL = excellent stuff. A first-rate string. That is all.

Hmm, actually I find that Ashaway strings are the best value for the money. If you think Ashaway strings are expensive from whereever you get them, you can always PM me to get a quote for the Ashaway strings, in either reels or sets.

    Cheers. :)

I think this is a very subjective statement. Some other players can just say something exactly opposite, based on their own experience.

I find the ML XL more of a fab than a fad. Before I used the ML XL, I thought it was expensive too. But now I would buy it even if Ashaway doubles the price on their already "expensive" price.

I used to use Ashaway MicroLegend XL. They were my favorite string for nylon games several years back. Super durable, but they lose their tension very easily. They remain durable because they become so loose. In the Waterloo area I know that they will cost about $30 for a stringing job.

I got Ashaway Rally 21 reel lengh 200M. I used string tension 22, 23 lbs for 5 racquets and all 5 strings were broken within 5 to 7 days. what would be the reason? . I have EXTHREE manual machine and I never go beyond 24 lbs. I used previously Microlegend XL and got complaints from 5 customers out of 30 strings. I bought a pack of 50pcs (cut pieces). Normally I am using BG 65 & BG 65 Ti strings (singles) and no complaint so far.

Where are the strings breaking ?

In the middle of the racket: your customers are too strong for the string.

Near the top of the racket: your customers are miss hitting too much.

Near grommets, the grommets are cut through by the racket. The knife sharp edge (especially on alloy frames) of the holes are cutting the string.

On outside of the frame, your customers are scraping the floor too much.

Over rigorous and forceful use of the awl whilst stringing will break strings.

Bad clamp or clamping whilest stringing will destroy strings.

    Fake strings wil break easily.

If you look at the edge of the breakage on the string, it should give you a clue on how the string is cut and broke.

i thought the microlegends were great strings. i am getting my racket restrung again with microlegend after a mishit, i had the strings for 8-10 weeks and they really held the tension well. i also get my coach to put the big A symbol on it, its meant to help grip the shuttle

Surely, a big solid circle would be more effective in gripping the shuttle than an A ? If you put an extra cross at the position where you miss hit, your new string could well last twice as long.

Using MLXL, I have never managed to break the string. Although I had to cut it to restring as my optimum tension was creeping upwards.

I am aware that this is already an old thread but since last year, I have been using Ashaway Microlegend strings i.e. the .68mm, on my two rackets. All I can say is this is very close to Yonex BG80 and BG85 strings. Very durable with a nice "medium feel" and with the touch of the Vectran feel. This is perhaps your best option other than Yonex and Ashaway Microlegend is definitely not a fad.

How could you say ML is expensive?

My local string pusher retails them at $80 (USD) per 200m reel, which is less than a reel of BG65.

It's not the XL, but just the MicroLegend.

He also have the old Zymax (non-Fire) at the same price (ZyMax 65 and ZyMax 67).

And I bought a reel of the good old durable MicroPower (0,70mm) for just a mere $65.

I think Ashaway keeps very high list prices, but in reality they often sell for much less. Probably to provide the compelling combination of offering a "high-end" string, at a very good bargain!

I mean, if they listed it a much less than Yonex strings, some people would be sceptic towards the quality.

And if they couldn't give any bargains on it, a lot of people probably wouldn't try them out in the first place - just remain using the same standard BG80 as they have for years....
