I used to do double-half-hitch knots ona ll four knots. Am now going for a figure-8 starting knot and 3 hitch knots.
ahh yes, a sort of a pretzel knot. a basic double-halft hitch, but the tie-ing end of the second hitch is inserted threw the first hitch...or something like that.
I have come to like this one, and I add a half-hitch behind it (between it and the frame). I lose a little bit more tension doing this, but I usually just compensate by adding an extra pound or so. The half-hitch is useful when the grommet has been widened by previous knots.
If you do not use a knot to pulll and tension a cross string, usually the first cross string, then you can tie almost any knot provided it is secure. This is because what you are knotting is just a tie-off. However, if you use a knot on a main string to pull and tension your first cross string then a starting knot is the best, because such a knot does not put a strain on the main (anchor) string that other knots do. If you use double half-hitch knots on a main and then pull and tension the first cross at high tension, your main string will be weakened or bruised. If you want to have all knots to be tie-offs then use a starting clamp on the outside of the frame for that first cross. But this will affect its playability (lack of punch) at the sweet spot.
