It's very common in Korea, too. It's just one style. All the guys in my family make intentionally goofy faces when having a picture taken. A whole family of class clowns. Japanese or Koreans might think this rather dorky or uncivilized. Who knows? In Korea, another common sight is people having their pictures taken with a deadpan expression and their feet together. This is different again.

haha! it's not only very common in japan and korea... in fact it's in the whole east asia... copying the japanese kawaii style... i find it kinda ridiculous too, but still somehow cute
