i heard from alot of people that weight training can stunt your growth, especially with heavy weights. is this true? is doing low weights but more reps better?
In this link... http://www.teenhealthfx.com/answers/Sports/1337.html ...they recommend for teenagers to "using relatively lightweights and do 2-3 sets of no more than 15 repetitions. You should also try to limit your workouts to 3, half-hour sessions per week at most. This is a safe way to work out and it will give you the results you want." As for weight lifting stunting growth, this link talks about it... http://www.teenhealthfx.com/answers/Sports/1441.html ..."There have been several studies conducted on teen weight lifting that suggest that certain types of weight lifting may damage the epiphysis, or growth plate, of your bones. There is evidence that lifting heavy weight could speed up growth plate closure, which would stunt your growth"
I didn't start doing serious weight training until I was out of high school. I would just stick with light weights or even basic work outs since you are still in high school.
I'm in highschool right now with some joint problems, so I prefer to do resistance training instead of weight training. All your basically doing is using rubber bands to simulate the motions used on machines, but at a slower pace with more reps.
