    Hello All,

I am trying to help restructure things in Southern California. I am looking in using to a numerical / formula based rating system. This way if a woman wants to play in a men's singles event, they will receive a men's singles rating (unfortunately there are not a lot of women players out here).

I have looked at the ELO formula (used by chess), however, I fear that using this system won't move up sand baggers (people who play in a level below their ability) quick enough.

I looked at the US table tennis association, and the US squash association as to what they are doing, and it looks promising. I can't seem to find the formula of what the US tennis association is using.

I do not think the IBF formula would be beneficial for our people because it rewards people for participating in tournaments and doesn't punish people for losing.

Has anyone come across somthing like this that they use and recommend?

    Thank you,
    Todd Aubin

WOW, I am suprised how may people have read my post but have not replied to it.:crying:

I am trying to develop a formula which would give more points to players who can beat better playes and "average" points for beating players close to their rating. At the same time, I want to penalize players for being beaten by lower ranked players but still receive some points for beating players who are rated below them.

Today, I herd a rumor that the same company which developed the tournament scheduling software (being used by usabadminton and ibf) is working on a rating system.

I still want to develop a rating system for my specific area. What do other people think about my ideas?

Too difficult and not worth the effort unless you have the will and time. Regardless, I applaud you on your effort. :)

The best method is to get together a group of SoCal Badminton Experts/Directors/Coaches that know the widest variety of players and form a panel. This panel can rank known players as A, B, C, D or Novice. Now create a master list online and have the panel be able to edit it.

    This panel should include:

Don Van: SAC Coach, former UCLA head coach and ex-OCBC Elite
A member from SGVBC: most likely Monki
    A member from OCBC
    A member from MBBC
A member who knows the SoCal high school players
A member who knows the SoCal collegiate players
Any other members who know the competitive players in their local area.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey I know those guys!

    Hey Dinkalot,

I know Monkey and Don pretty well, I should try to contact them with their opinion of what I am trying to do.

I have talked with a good friend of mine (usa badminton / IBF insider source) . I have herd that the people who developed the tournamentsoftware program is working on something similar to what is used in Tennis (which could negate all my hard work) to develop a player rating. However, this program is at a least a year away. Also, as I see it, it may not be applicable with a localized, small population (i.e. southern california).

I really want to restructure things with the SCBA, and one thing that really needs work done is classification of A, B, C, D players. I am currently working with a friend of mine (who is an engineer for an aeronautical/aerospace company) to help me with the math/formula. Right now, I expect that most of the population (i.e. 66%, using one standard deviation above mean{yes stats is a bitch:( }) would rate them selves as a D or C player. So I am trying to adjust player rating to reflect this. Hopefully, in the future, this number and the formula could adjust a player's rating to accurately reflect their ability.

    Does anyone have a suggestion of what classify's a player as an A, B, C, D player?

The downside of my plan is that someone needs to input player results for each match of a tournament into the formula. And this requires an individual's time and energy. However, I don't see anyway around this. I am hoping to develop a system to pay an individual to perform this task. But we will see how the SCBA responds to my proposal.

I feel like I am flying blind here. Does anyone else have any suggestions? I would appreciate anyone who can offer their opinion.

My goal is to promote badminton. I am trying to act locally to imporve things and hopefully my actions can help the global badminton community positively.

PLEASE.... offer any advice you all can give.

    Not exactly the same

    Hey Netasia,

This is not exactly the same thing I am looking for.

    Thanks anyway.

Badminton Alberta maintains an overall provincial ranking system that is essentially a ladder. If you beat someone ranked above you, you take their spot and they drop down one.

They also have a second type of system for the Alberta series tournaments where you earn points for how far you get into the draw and at the season you are paid money.
