    Leth wins Spanish Open
    22 May 2006

Jens-Kristian Leth of Denmark has won the men’s singles title at the XIX Spanish Open after beating Finland’s Ville Lång in the final. Germany’s Petra Overzier claimed the women’s singles title after beating Judith Meulendijks of the Netherlands. Germany also had success in the women’s doubles event with Carina Mette and Birgit Overzier clinching the deciding game in a thrilling final.

Jens-Kristian Leth and Ville Lång both beat Canadian opponents in their semi finals of the men’s singles event. Leth defeated Andrew Dabeka whilst Lång knocked out Stefan Wojcikiewicz. In the final Leth continued his good run of results and comprehensively beat Lång.

The German female team found their form in Madrid with impressive wins in the women’s singles and doubles events. The Overzier family celebrated as Petra won the singles title, and Birgit claimed the doubles event with partner Carina Mette.

Welsh pair Matthew Hughes and Martin Lewis confirmed that they deserved their top seed status by winning the men’s doubles event. Hughes and Lewis upset the home fans by beating Jose Antonio Crespo and Nicolas Escartin of Spain in the semi finals, the Welsh then went on to beat Danish double act Simon Mollyhus and Anders Kristiansen in the final.

Portuguese mixed doubles pair Alexandre Paixao and Filipa Lamy has achieved some encouraging results recently. They continued their good form in Spain by reaching the final. However the Danish/Russian combination of Rasmus Andersen and Anastasia Russkikh was too strong for the Portuguese in the final.

Women’s singles: Petra Overzier (GER) beat Judith Meulendijks (NED) 21/18, 21/11
Men’s doubles: Matthew Hughes and Martin Lewis (WAL) beat Simon Mollyhus and Anders Kristiansen (DEN) 21/18, 22/10
Women’s doubles: Carina Mette and Birgit Overzier (GER) beat Julie Houmann and Mette Nielsen (DEN) 21/17, 12/21, 26/24
