    2000-Huaiwen XU

XU is Chinese but lives in Germany. Like all Asian competitors, she plays to a very impressive standard. She is currently ranked number 50 in the world rankings due to not having participated in many Grand Prix tournaments. She is capable however, of regularly beating those ranked much higher than herself. Cerainly, Elena Nozdran is not one to disagree as it was XU who ended her challenge for the Volant D’Or in 2000. For a few years now, the German players challenge regularly for the Volant D’Or.

    1999-Marina ANDRIEWSKAYA

Although hard to guess from her name, Marina is Swedish. She is also very well ranked at an international level : among the top 30. Despite being ranked lower than Helena, Marina won the tournament in 1999. The Swedish are not regular competitors at the tournament. In fact, at the same time of year, there have been tournaments in Iceland or Norway and the Swedes have preferred to participate closer to home. They came in 1999 but it is unlikely that Marina will return to challenge again for the trophy.

    2000-Yangchung XIE

Another Chinese competitor living in Germany, XIE won the Volant D’Or in 2000. He beat the favourite and regular Volant D’Or contendor Vladislav Drutchenko.

    1999-Pullela GOPICHAND

For three years, the Indian competitors have included the Volant D’Or tournament in their calender. In 1999, while looking for the points to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games. GOPICHAND won out against a very talented young welsh player Richard VAUGHAN. Since then, these two players have risen to the top of the international game, distinguishing themselves in many international competitions. Pullela, among other victories, won the All England in 2001. Both were invited and present in Brunei in August 2001 for the World Grand Prix finals which had the 16 best players in the world competing. Currently, both are counted among the world’s top 20 - we dream of having them return to play for the Volant D’Or...who knows....
