Sania mania hits Ahmedabad
Shweta Singh, TNN | Aug 26, 2012, 06.01AM IST
Saina Nehwal was only nine when she saw a dream not many of her age would even think of — an Olympic medal. Such was her determination to bring laurels for the nation that she chose badminton over cartoons, rigorous fitness regime over movies and proper diet food over junk.
At 22, in the month of August this year, all her hardships and sacrifices of her parents finally paid off as she stood on the podium wearing the London Olympic bronze medal around her neck, her head held high and tears of joy rolling down her eyes as she saw the Indian tricolour being hoisted. "Earlier, after every loss I used to cry but I coach said if you keep crying then when will you start winning? I have learnt a lot from my experiences and am a much stronger player mentally. But I still cry after losing and also after winning big matches," Saina said.
"My father didn't tell me till recently that how he had borrowed money from his friends so that I could have shoes, rackets and shuttle cocks. I chose badminton and gave up studies in 12th class to take part in 2008 Beijing Olympics.

I can't help wondering what rewards and praises and worship etc. will be in store for the winner of Olympic gold for India. (competitive, physical events i.e. not shooting). Must be pretty crazy.
If Saina ever wins one, especially by defeating a China player, they would probably declare a national holiday in her honor LOL.

It is given in this article
http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/mint-it-like-badminton/487022/
So even though they may not be exact figures.....saina is earning as much as Lin Dan and more than LCW...With a Rs 40-crore three-year deal with Rhiti Sports Management in her kitty, badminton star Saina Nehwal is now the world’s richest player in her sport. Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni makes about fives times what Nehwal would from endorsements but the badminton ace trumps quite a few peers from the country’s most lucrative sport, cricket.
Incidentally, the same sports management agency had signed Dhoni in 2010 for a three-year deal worth Rs 210 crore. Nehwal’s earnings just from endorsements, based on website figures for other top international badminton stars, make for pretty reading. That includes her male counterparts such as Malaysian world number two Lee Chong Wei (who makes Rs 8.8 crore annually, including endorsements, match fees and others) or the Chinese Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan (who makes Rs 12.6 crore annually).
Confirms Arun Pandey, chairman and managing director of Rhiti Sports, “Yes, she is the highest endorsement earner in the world as far as the game of badminton goes. She is a sports icon of the country and also the highest paid endorser in non-cricketing sports.”
Kwan Entertainment & Marketing Solutions COO Indranil Das Blah says, “Saina is the leading non-cricketing sports personality, who is performing consistently and the deals are value for money. Though, if you compare with cricketing celebrities, there is a huge gap. Earlier, just after winning an Olympic gold medal, Abhinav Bindra had signed a few very high-value deals. But Saina is consistently successful.”

Now it would seem that even the top Chinese players are underpaid ... But there are so many of them that will unlikely change much of their pay package.
Just wonder when will Sindhu enjoy such perks as Saina? Will she ever outdo SN?Last edited by Loh; 09-21-2012 at 08:39 AM.
