New training base for national shuttlers
PETALING JAYA: The national shuttlers gearing up for the Doha Asian Games have moved their training base to Gymnasium Two in Bukit Jalil.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) high performance manager Lim Kok Wye said that the players had shifted from Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara on Thursday.
A NEW HOME: Top doubles shuttlers Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah in action during training at the Gymnasium Two in Bukit Jalil Monday.
“Except for players who are on their way back from Taipei (after the Taiwan Open), the others have started training here. The rest of the players will go through full-time training starting on Wednesday,” said Kok Wye.
“Currently, we have placed nine courts. We will have a total of 12 by next month. This will be enough for both the singles and doubles players to train. The players are also staying at the Bukit Jalil hostel here.
“By being here, the players will have easy access to all the facilities at Bukit Jalil. They will also be focused in their preparation for the Asian Games in Doha (Dec 1-15).”
The BAM had directed the players to move their training base following the instructions of Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said, who wanted all the elite athletes to be based in Bukit Jalil.
Kok Wye however said that the junior players, under the charge of Rashid Sidek, would remain at Bukit Kiara.
