Badminton:Eei Hui ecstatic after beating formidable S. Koreans

    By RAJES PAUL

PETALING JAYA: National doubles shuttler Chin Eei Hui will never forget her 27th birthday.

Yesterday, Eei Hui, who is making a comeback from a back injury, and Wong Pei Tty pulled off a stunning 21-14, 9-21, 21-18 win over South Koreans Lee Hyo-jung-Lee Kyung-won in the quarter-finals of the Indonesian Open in Jakarta. It was the Malaysian’s first win over the South Koreans in seven years.

Today, world No. 1 Eei Hui-Pei Tty will take on third seeds Cheng Wen-hsing-Chien Yu-chin of Taiwan for a place in the final.
Eei Hui, who turned 27 on Thursday, was ecstatic after beating the formidable Koreans.

Eei Hui, who is making a comeback from a back injury, and Wong Pei Tty pulled off a stunning 21-14, 9-21, 21-18 win over South Koreans Lee Hyo-jung-Lee Kyung-won in the quarter-finals of the Indonesian Open in Jakarta. It was the Malaysian’s first win over the South Koreans in seven years. - Kamal Selehuddin/The Star.

“We have been playing against them since we first paired up in 2002 and we have never beaten them. Today, we have made a breakthrough,” she said in a telephone interview.

Eei Hui took a break after hurting her back during the All-England in March. She returned with Pei Tty in last week’s Singapore Open, where they crashed out in the early round.

“Pei Tty and I were able to read our opponents’ game well. We also had a better control of the shuttle while they seemed to be troubled by the draught,” said Eei Hui.

“This win is a big boost to our morale. It will be tough against the Taiwanese tomorrow. We have beaten them before but they have a better record against us. We will try to continue with our momentum here.”

Malaysia will also have one representative each in the men’s singles and doubles semi-finals today.

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei tamed South Korean Park Sung-hwan 21-9, 21-13 in just 30 minutes. But he won’t be facing Lin Dan next because the Chinese was stunned 21-18, 17-21, 4-21 by compatriot Chen Jin.
Lin Dan could have been injured, judging by the third game score.

The other men’s singles semi-final is an all-Indonesia affair bet*we*en Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Taufik Hidayat.

In the men’s doubles, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who fought gallantly to overcome Indonesians Luluk Hadiyanto-Joko Riyadi 21-11, 17-21, 21-11, will take on Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China for a place in the final.

Defending champions Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, however, went down 10-21, 15-21 to South Korean All-England champions Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung.
