Badminton: Pei Tty-Eei Hui need more confidence
By Ajitpal Singh
2009/07/06
WORLD No 1 women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui have what it takes to become world champions but they lack the confidence and self-belief to make that happen at the World Championships in Hyderabad on Aug 10-16. And this is why Pei Tty-Eei Hui will be working extra hard on their mental strength ahead of the championships. The pair, who won their first international event as the world's top ranked pair in the recent Indonesian Open, are the top seeds at the World Championships.
National coach Rexy Mainaky said Pei Tty-Eei Hui are prepared physically but need to work on their focus when on court. "They sometimes lack the focus in tournaments but it's something they can improve on in time for the world meet," said Rexy.
"They have a knack of winning against top pairs on their day. They just need to stay focused and cut back on mistakes during matches."
Pei Tty-Eei Hui made a return to the international stage after the latter's back injury in the Sudirman Cup in May and helped Malaysia claim bronze for the first time in that competition.
They followed up with a quarter-final appearance in the Singapore Open before winning the title in the Indonesian Open.
In Jakarta, Pei Tty-Eei Hui beat a host of top pairs including last year's Beijing Olympic Games silver medallists Lee Kyung Won-Lee Hyo Jung of South Korea and China's No 3 Cheng Su-Zhao Yunlei en route to the title.
The pair were also finalists in the recent Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold.
Rexy also said Eei Hui fears aggravating her back injury again.
"She is a little careful on court but that is normal for a player who has just returned from an injury. However, she should be comfortable at the world meet," said Rexy.
Rexy added he is happy with their fitness and current form.
"They can last three games in every round of a competition and proved it in recent tournaments. I don't see a problem with their stamina and endurance," he said.
