Hi guys, I just wonder, if I leave a 10m string unopen in the original plastic bag. How long is that gonna last for?? Forever?? I mean if you buy one string, say BG-65 and I leave it there for 10 years. Is this string gonna be as good as the new one that we purchase at the shop today in terms of quality?? Thank you in advance.

Good question. However, does it really matter? If you have a machine, just string it and see if it plays. I just look at it as a pack of free string. If you don't use it, you might as well toss it in trash can.

I suppose it'd depend on how you store them and what the environment is like. One thing for sure it's a synthetic material that degrades over time, although theoretically it'll still outlast you. So, I think you can store it for 10 years and then use it. It most probably won't be quite as good (i.e., retains all of its material properties) as when it just came off the production line, but, if stored properly, you're unlikely to notice either.

    FWIW, HTH.

P.S.: Why do you ask? Did you just come upon a forgotten stash of strings in the attic or something?

Thank you guys for replying. I just saw someone offer to sell 4 BG-80, 1 BG-70 and one Gosen string for only 20 bucks. But the package seems to be more than 10 years old. I am thinking if i should buy that to get myself a bargin if that works fine. By the way, I dont have a stringing machine and i have no intension to leave it there for that long. :)

In 2004 I got some BG70 from San Diego Badminton Supply.
The packaging was advertising the 1996 Atlanta Olympics,
so I guess the string was around 8 years old.
It played fine, and held tension really well.

Assuming at room temperature, no problems. If baking or frozen in your car trunk, that can have an adverse effect.

Oh really?? But too bad that i have no idea where did he store the string for that period of time. Anyways, I will buy it and try that out. Hopefully it works fine. Thank you all, I appreciate that.

I agree on that. I don't really mind paying more for the string if it lasts long, but the stringing cost is killing me. The last time i restrung one of racquet and that last me only 5 hours. High tension + low tempurature (it's freezing here in Wellington, NZ) + mishiting cause the breakage, so i decide to lower my string tension. And that affects my performance. I can smash harder and control better with 26/28. Think it is time to learn how to string and burn some money.
