National chief coach Yap Kim Hock will opt for centralised training in Madrid rather than London for the badminton players before the World Championships from Sept 18-24.

The championships will be held in Madrid.

“We have received positive news from Madrid. They will arrange our stay in a hostel and training venues. The BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) will decide on the centralised training venue soon,” said Kim Hock.

“Certainly, training in Spain for 10 days before the world meet will be ideal for our players.”

Getting used to the food and wine would also be good too. LOL.

Ah, a bit of the Spanish Merlot can motivate the players a lot. And not forgetting the tradition of an afternoon nap after a solid spanish meal-- no wonder, we opt for the Madrid training over the London one. Yap Kim Hock, you are managing with style.

I don't know how much it will costs for 10days early training in Spain before WC!!! But I hope Yap Kim Hock can realise that the money he & our M'sia squad spent, all is M'sian tax payers hard earned money!!!!

Just like before 2006 Thomas Cup, Malaysia squad moved to Kuching of Sarawak for earlier trained & even arrived in Japan earlier than other countries squad, but eventually what is the result???

So, MR. Yap Kim Hock, even you are headcoach of M'sian badminton squad, don't just simply spend the tax payers money WITHOUT results!!!

hahaha, you think he does not know the word "results" ?

But seriously, our guys need to acclimatise because they do not play in Europe that often. 10 days is good because they can settle down but if you say 5 days it may be too rushed for our players. For such an important event, and since we want to do well, it is almost imperative to stay 10 days.

Don't forget it is getting cooler in Europe by that time and coming from a hot climate, you need to settle in slowly. IF LCW thinks he is preparing for this and will win this, then we ought to do the right thing by him.

Madrid is likely to be cheaper (maybe by as much as 50%) than expensive London. And they are staying in a hostel, not 5* hotel. As for results, nobody can guarantee anything. But look at it this way. Malaysia stand a good chance of taking a gold in either the MD or MS ,based on current form.Even if it's just the MS, it's justifiable. It's not like Singapore. The SBA is dead poor and they have less talent, although to be fair, their XD and MD are showing good progress but they are hampered by their mickey mouse budget. Singapore is always concerned with efficiency but in sports (or for that matter, anything great) you need to waste quite a bit of money before you see results. Great champions stutter considerably before they become consistent. They also fail often in their early years and this helps build up their mental strength for life.
As for Thomas cup, nobody expected WCH to be out of action at the crucial stage, otherwise Malaysia has enough insurance to beat Denmark and challenge China. Don't blame KBH. The poor chap's mentally not as well prepared as the Dane, even though his badminton strokes suggest better skills. Expect him to continue to flounder (before he finds form) during the early stage of Li mao's guidance.
BTW, Madrid's a lovely place. Great seafood, great shopping, 24-hour MRT,clean public toilets. Must bring your Spanish phrase book if you have zero Spanish. Otherwise get help from bookstore and hotel staff to get understood in English. Never let your luggage out of sight for even 3 secs! We lost our 30kg bag inside a building while we went upstairs for a few minutes to check in. This was just after midnight when we arrived. It's not the Spaniards. It's the syndicates. A friend lost his laptop (left on the floor next to him) while checking in at a 5* hotel (!)reception in another European city.

Anyway....no matter where they choose to train...I hope they can bring some surprise for all of us...I have faith on the MS and MD...I think they have potential to win if they are ready in any form....The first things is they must not be afraid of their opponent...Because once you feel afraid...you will lose easily....I think what Yap Kim Hock need to do is built up his players confidence...Malaysia....You can do it...!!!

i suppose malaysians only spend any real money on 3 sports on the world stage - badminton, bowling and squash? i don't think expenditure on other events are even close to these 3 ...

I know that a country must spend money to cultivate & grow athletics because all is honorary for a country.

What my points is, sometimes BAM & the headcoach is over & simply spent the tax payers money! Just like is it our players really needs to go Madrid 10days earlier before WC to suite the enviroment? If I'm not msitaken, the weather forecast at Madrid in Sept should be around 27-28c, this weather condition is not much different in Genting Highland of Malaysia.

This is similar with recently Malaysia Youth & Sports Ministry proposed to spend almost RM500mil to build a "Sports Training Centre" in London!!!

My question is : Shall our players really needs to go Madrid 10days earlier before WC start?

Look at it this way, the Chinese probably brought Madrid back to China to prepare for the WC (search for a thread on the Chinese preparation for OG 2004)...

Badminton: Early setback doesn’t bother Kim Hock
    13 Sep 2006

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MALAYSIA will only be allowed to train at the official venue — the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid — just two days before the start of the World Badminton Championships on Monday.

But national head coach Yap Kim Hock is far from perturbed with this setback.

If anything, Kim Hock said the players, who arrived in Madrid on Wednesday, have adapted well to their new surroundings.

Even training sessions have been arranged to coincide with the players’ actual playing schedule. In short, it is all systems go for the championships.

Although they are based at the Residential Aristos, a private club which offers accommodation and has seven badminton courts, Kim Hock said the stint is worthwhile in helping the players remain focused.

"The players remain focused and are gearing up well for the tournament. They are away from the limelight and have already adapted well to the conditions," said Kim Hock from Madrid yesterday.

"We have also decided to train in the late evening as we would be playing at the similar time in the tournament. We are also getting used to the late lunch time here which is at 3pm."

The Malaysians are not the only team who arrived in Madrid early to acclimatise.

Japan and South Korea have also set up base at the Residential Aristos but due to tactical reasons, Kim Hock has managed to avoid joint training sessions with rival teams.

Malaysia’s biggest threats in the men’s doubles are Korea’s Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae.

Malaysia, with Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chon Ming-Koo Kien Keat and Fairuzizuan Tazari-Lin Woon Fui, have a realistic chance of securing a first world crown.

Meanwhile, the withdrawal of the Netherlands’ Mia Audina cost Wong Mew Choo dearly as she is now expected to meet Olympic champion and top seed Zhang Ning of China in the third round
