This happened during the days when I was playing badminton in high school....been around 4-5 years now.

I remember hurting my wrist either from shovelling snow(hitting ice with wrist at an awkward angle) and then went on the team and played for 2 months.

It hurt so much back then that I couldn't play piano cuz every movement in the joint would be too painful. Doctor told me to take some rest and put ice and apply heat on it. The usual...

Nowadays, I can't do palm push up, can't bend my wrist backwards or I'd get pain. I included some photos to show the buldge that has developed and never subsided. Need some input on what to do.

The red circle indicates the buldge and I included my left wrist as comparison.

    wrist hurts

    hi wing.

i have the same problem. but it is not caused by shovelling.
i hope i can get out of it quick. i tried chinese tradition therapy (aka 跌打), chiropractor. i m about to try accupuncature with it. let me know what is your outcome. i believe we have the same symptoms, can't do push ups, hurts when bent backwards. . my doc told me that i have overused my wrist, which is possible. i have been out of the game for about 6 weeks now.
i miss my game lots n hope to get well soon. stay in touch with each other on this, good luck to u.

Has anyone tried band-assisted distraction/traction exercises for relieving joint pain? I tried some similar exercises on my ankle once, and it felt extremely good afterwards. Here's the article that I found about this topic which lead me to this technique:

So i went to see my family doctor today....
he just looked at it and said that it's the tendon and it won't heal back.
He said the best i can do is just go swimming and strengthen it...

See a specialist. If u need something very bad a lot is possible. "He just looked at it ..." ok very good method :(
Maybe u must pay urself but see a specialist.
For sport professionels a lot is possible.. and they won't see a general doctor..

You're most obviously suffering from tenosynovitis(=tendovaginitis). Yeh medical terms, the dictionary didn't have the common term.

Anyway, my friends suffered from this same problem too, and he after two months went to see a doctor. The doctor then removed the packed water (yes that is what is inside the bump) and told my friend to rest it for a while. After like two weeks his wrist was back to normal, and he's had no problems with his wrist ever since.

This is a very common problem for tennis players, especially for those who with heavy rackets use their wrists excessively.

    not exactly your problem.

although i m not a doctor, i think i know what you are talking about with the liquid being built up in the back of the wrist area. my accupunturist actually had that problem. her doctor scheduled her to have a minor surgery done to redraw the liquid out. after the western doctor diagnosed her problem, my accupunturist bought 2 ordinary syringe needles and withdraw the liquid herself because she didn't want to go through surgery or waited for weeks to get treatment. funny enough, her tenosynovitis problem was solved. PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM NOT RECOMMENDING SUCH SELF-PERFORMING TREATMENT! My accupunturist is also a tradition chinese doctor with 50 yrs of chinese herbal medicine, and chinese traditional therapy (yeah, she is close to 70).
with her recent experience with the tenosynovitis + her observation on my wrist, she is very sure that i did not have the problem. she said that my wrist and the joint has overused. my therapist from the hospital said that i have a tendonitis, which may be caused by too much computer mouse usage with combination of my badminton play. anyhow, all i know is that my accupuncture treatment got me much better but now it's improvement is plateau. i m almost cured, but not there yet... sigh...

it's been a long time since my wrist injury.
i m back in court now and playing regularly. it never completely heal.
however, one of my buddies taught me to put hockey tape around the wrist to protect it. i have been using this technique ever since. it works well.
basically preventing the joint from hyper extension. wing, give it a try,
    how's your recovery?

I somtimes get a little bump that grows on my wrist, but I do not have any pain associated with it. It sounds like to me that you have stretched your ligaments in your wrist and the only thing that will re-tighten stretched ligaments is surgery. I would not recommend surgery for this injury.

Sorry, but even the Mona Lisa is falling apart.

    Wrist Injury

    :crying:

I too suffer the same problem. I accidentally went over-eager on my return using a backhand smash at the net and twisted my wrist too much that it hurt alot!

Then I noticed, week after week that the pain didnt subside, even when I no longer did the move that hurt my wrist.

I went to an orthopedist but he said i had no fractured bone, its a ligament problem. True enough, when he bends my wrist back, it hurts like h#ll!

He told me to find another sport because this will never heal. But being the hard-headed baddict that I am, I bought a wrist support (similar to what bowlers use) and wore it tight. so far so good, no more pain when playing, but i noticed that my wrist has become so weak, pushing a heavy door open hurts. Don't get me wrong, my muscular build can push more than a heavy door, i guess its not the muscles in my forearms that's weak, but what causes the pain is the damaged ligaments.

Now, has anyone here ever fully recovered from this? I mean, is there no more pain when you bend your hand up. (like signaling someone to stop with your hand)

I just hope that there is a way because i'm never giving up the sport of badmiton! :)

hi there - i think i am suffering the same injury, pain when the wrist is hyper-extended. i am really keen on this 'hockey tape' application at the wrist joint. may i know where i can purchase these tapes and if possible, a picture of how they look like will be really great!

    thanks

    Wrist injury

I guess you should have your sports physician or Hand surgeon examine the wrist. In the past, I have seen athletes with tendinopathy, ganglion cyst, fractured scaphoid bone, triangular cartilage complex tear, radio-ulna ligament tear, scapho-lunate ligament tear (lunate subluxation), etc.

You need to first get a proper diagnoses. Then it would be easier to treat knowing the source of problem. :D

Some would require just rehabilitation exercises. Others could be rectified with surgery. However, success still depends on the results of your rehabilitation process.

hi sportsdoc - just wondering if you can provide some advice. i'm looking to get some tapes to support my wrist when playing badminton. i injured it about 2-3 months ago, and have problems hyperextending it (feels sore) during and after play.

what type of tapes do you think is most effective:

    1) zinc oxide
    2) elastic adhesive bandages
    3) cohesive bandages

any advice will be much appreciated.

    thanks

this is the hockey tape i m talking about
ice hockey is canada's national sports, so any canadian can buy em in any sports stores. i m not sure about UK though
    http://www.americanhockeycenter.com/white.htm
there is different kinds, get the cloth texture one.

u don't need a lot of tape if u apply it correctly. with only a couple of bucks worth of hockey tape, it can probably last me for at least one season if not more.

these pictures are taken after a 3 hour session of play.

You would need to find out whether your movement restriction will benefit from taping. Usually I would start with Powerflex (self-adhesive bandage) for the grip and place Strappal (Zn Oxide) on top. You need to assess the injury properly to ensure that your taping does not worsen the injury.

Honestly, most players do not prefer to play with taping as it may be restrictive and hence, prevent you from executing your skill.

Looks like there's some strangulation of your blood supply. You need to consider using self-adhesive bandage e.g. Strappal which may not restrict blood cirucluation. I would try various ways of strapping to find the most comfortable and effective taping.
