on to the matter of the design, wow that would be so cool. just hope for no tsunami or flash flood or the stadium would be a mess. but i guess they must have thought of it and have contigency plans for natural disasters. woh! seriously creative juices flowing there...

I would be terribly disappointed if the authorities have not considered the safety aspects.

But for our biggest investment in Marina Bay, where the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resorts is currently work-in-progress and where our Esplanade-Theatres-on-the-Bay and the upcoming Singapore Flyer are located among the international hotels at Suntec City, the Marina Barrage, soon to be completed, will turn Marina Bay into a reservoir, providing drinking water as well as a stable water level for a variety of water activities and events.

No, it doesn't mean higher tax. In fact if you're talking about income tax(direct taxation), the rate has been going down, but the GST, which is based on consumption (or indirect tax), has gone up. But despite lower income tax, the Inland Revenue is collecting more money because companies and individuals are making more money.

Furthermore, from what I understand this Singapore Hub is not totally financed by the government as there will be private partnership with the public sector. The successful bidder will contribute not only money but also ensure that the project is successful on a long-term basis. This uniquie arrangement seems to be the first of its kind in the world. The Singapore Open has for a long time been held at the beautiful Singapore Indoor Stadium and most probably will continue to be held there. Although SIS is in Kallang itself, it will not be pulled down, only the outdoor National Stadium will be demolished.

It is quite funny that some Singaporean have already given some nicknames to the new stadium designs: (must be the same peopel who called the Esplanade the 'Durian')

- the design by Singapore Gold Consortium = "Toilet Seat"
- the design by Singapore Sports Hub Group = "Pimple"
- the design by Alpine Group = "Used Tissue Paper"

It is hard to satisfy these critical people!

where to look at the design again linus....i have got to see this for myself. yeah some arehard to please but i think some may just give those design nicknames to endear it to them. like we giving our close mates nicknames.

I also couldn't find the other two models from the internet although the local newspapers have shown them front page.

Some nicknames are okay, like the 'durian' for the Esplanade, but 'toilet seat' and 'used tissue paper' are not complimentary at all.

The 'horse-shoe' and 'the dome' may be more preferable.
As for 'pimple', really it is a little far fetched.

On Sat, 19 January 2008, SSHC, led by Dragages Singapore (a subsidiary of France-based Bouygues Construction) was selected as the Preferred Bidder for the Sports Hub project after "a rigorous evaluation exercise".

The Minister for Community Development, Youth & Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, announced the results at the Singapore Sports Hub Tender Award Press Conference and remarked:

"The Sports Hub will be a strategic component for Singapore to compete against other major cities and sports events venues in Asia and on the international stage. It will further enhance Singapore's positioning as a globally preferred venue for premium sports and entertainment events."

"Together with the other major developments around Marina Bay and Sentosa, the Sports Hub will also strengthen Singapore's position as an international financial hub and tourist destination."

"We believe the strength of the SSHC's proposals, working in partnership with SSC, will place the Sports Hub alongside the world's best and most dynamic sports, entertainment and lifestyle venues."

"With the advantage of a 25-year legacy planning horizon, and the best of breed visionary team from the SSHC, the Singapore Sports Hub can create the same buzz that other world class venues do, for example, Wembley Stadium in London; the Reebok stadium in Manchester; Sydney Olympic Park in Australia; Madison Square Gardens in New York; and Yarra Park in Melbourne."

And in today's Business Times, it was reported that Genting International plc (GIL) (of Malaysian origin) confirmed that it is currently in preliminary talks with SSHC to build and operate a 500-room hotel (construction cost around S$200 million) over a 25-year tenure in the Sports Hub (to be called Premier Park). GIL through Resorts World is building six hotels with a total of 1,830 rooms by 2010 at its Sentosa Integrated Resorts.

SINGAPORE SPORTS HUB CONSORTIUM

Dome-shaped stadium design, with plastic outer membrane allowing for different lighting configurations at night.
Roof material allows images to be prjected on it, like a giant IMAX screen.

The SSH's 'Premiere Park' proposal involves a dome-shaped stadium with a lightweight retractable roof.

Youth and community-oriented activities to make the Sports Hub vibrant year-round.

The Sports Hub is expected to be ready in end 2011.
