I recently bought a couple of bags of MP grommets (the U shaped ones) and put them on a racket that didn't previously have them. I put four along the bottom of the head and with the same string (BG85) at the same tension (24 lbs) found the string bed to feel more elastic, and not in a good way. The string bed lost some of its crispness, and especially on touch shots, the string bed felt a little too 'bouncy'. I've noticed a lot of good rackets don't bother with the MP grommets and they seem to play just fine. I thought they improved string life and put less pressure on the sides of the holes, but I hadn't expected them to make a big difference in the feel of the strings. Has anyone else seen this effect?
I did that for my old AR80 and I feel it has more bouncy feeling also. I use BG85 only. However, since I string it @ 20X22, I do not feel any difference in feeling. My wife loves it because she can hit the shuttle further now and made me run for it. Since all my other racquet came with MP grommets, I can not tell if it will make any difference in feeling. I put them on some of my friends racquets and they like it because the string last longer or their smash is faster. I did not hear anything about the control or feeling.
I've already done the MP grommet upgrade. I love it, string lasts longer, higher tension, more power. Added total of 6 on bottom (3 on each side of shaft) and 5 on top. Strung Ashway PG-65 (blue) at 30-32lbs. I have not had a vertical string break yet, always the horizontal breaks first. Too bad the holes on the horizontal is too far apart or else I would use the MP grommets on the horizontal too.
Okay, I know someone else posted a few photos of the MP modification already. But will silentheart and viper2005 post their respective MP mod for us to see ? Thanks! Pete
Thanks for the photos silentheart but this is my first post for this thread... I think high tension armortec and NS string lift can benefit from the use of U-type grommets like those in MP series.
Just recently i was forced to use a racket without grommets (my main racket is a MP77, it broke it's strings). I was both amazed and dissapointed. Amazed because i realised i could control the ball MUCH MUCH better, and i never knew i could be so deceptive with this new found accuracy. On the other hand, i was dissapointed because i felt like the 'oomph' of power was gone already as well as the sound ive grown to love so much from MP77. Was forced to play deceptively all day yesterday and though it won me points ive never been able to before, it didnt leave me satisfied since it felt 'dampened'. I could still hit to baseline and all that, but i guess im a player who pushes to the extreme for offense rather than control. Just my share of experience.
No problem . . . One needs a dose of LSD once in a while to relieve marriage symptoms - joke intended.
