Thumbs up Interview with Tony/Candra after against Chan/Koo in QF Match

Tony & Candra interviewed by Edwin Leung :

Tony, could you say a few words and comments of today match?

Tony: We were a bit tired in the second set. I am happy to win this match, as i havn't play the malaysian pair before, they are really fast and attacking is strong, hence we try to kept attacking and drive all the time, on the 3rd set they seems a bit nervous and make some error, hence we won the last few points luckily.

How about your performance compare to your top?

Tony: 80% compare to my best performance for today, while yesterday is a bit weaker. Today I play better than yesterday.

What do you think re the match tomorrow?

Tony: Yes, I hope we are getting better and better, I have confidence to play more better than today.

Candra, please give a short comment about the match.

Candra: I could say 80% performance to my best performance, today I play better than yesterday.

Have you play with the malay pair before?

Candra: I have partner with Sigit and have played against them before, but with Tony this is the first time.

Is this the first time you play again with Tony after so many years?

Candra: No, we partner in this year Indonesia Open, this is my second time, next week Hong Kong Open the 3rd time.

Will you move to USA like Tony?

Candra: No, I retired from playing in PBSI this year, and I am working for a company in Indonesia. I will return to Indo afterwards.

Cool Tony and Chandra as wild card

If IBF know how to market the sports of Badminton then Chandra/Tony should be invited as wild card in coming World championship.

Actually Candra and Tony are of Chinese descent. Just like Hendrawan and Alan Budikusuma or Halim Haryanto. It is true that Chinese (mainland and overseas or descendants) seem to dominate the badminton world. Indonesia's Great, Rudi Hartono and Liem Swee King are Chinese descent.

Pardon me, I don't know much about Indonesian names or population structures, but neither 'Candra Wijaya' nor 'Tony Gunawan' seems to be a Chinese name, is it? In fact the former is actually a quite common Indian name. So why are you 100% sure that they are of Chinese ancestry? Where did they get these "foreign" names from?

You're asking questions that are verging on political history and politics of Indonesia. The country adopted a national policy in the past to have every citizen regardless of ethnicity to adopt an Indonesian name. Search the forum for more treads on Candra Wijaya. You'll come up with many useful references.
