Following the overwhelming response to the Singles tournament during the last June school holidays, the Doubles events which concluded last Saturday, 9 September, were also well-supported. Naturally, most of the participants came from the schools, both primary and secondary, and the tertiary institutions like the polytechnics and universities.

Congratulations once again to the SBA and its officials for organizing such a well-run championships. Even for such a relatively minor local event meant for residents, the SBA website gave an up-to-date electronic account of the results and scores which is of international standard. The young players learned to get used to a high standard of procedure and officiating which is expected at international competitions.

I reached the SB Hall at 5 pm, 30 mins before the tournament begins. The venue was already brightly lit up and the sound system of reasonable quality was in place. The prize presentation area was tastefully set up as well, with the medals and winners stand properly arranged. Some supervising officials were inspecting the playing area, the net posts and height and making sure that the electronic scoring equipment is in order.

Each event is preceded with a march past of players and officials. When the line judges have taken their positions, the umpire and service judge will line up with the players at the net. Introductions are made through the sound system and when their names are called, the players will step forward, take a bow before stepping back in line. After the announcements, play begins with the toss of the coin to decide who to serve or to choose sides. And when the match is over, the officials will retire in an orderly fashion as they first appear.

Here are some highlights during the Finals.

For now, I will show only the matches for the GDU13 (Girls' Doubles Under 13) and GDU15, the results of which are as follows:

    GDU13

Anna Sun Yu Xin (Singapore Chinese Girls School) /Triyachart Natthaporn (Rosyth) beat Grachel Teo Ting Wei (Rivervale Pri Sch)/Adalie Ling Fang Hui(Rosyth), 21-13, 21-16 (21m)

    GDU15

Thitirat Triyachart/Tanapat Pisitpong (Keat Youngsters) beat Melissa Leong/Tan Shu Yin (SCGS-Keat Youngsters) 21-14, 21-14 (19m). Coincidently, these two pairs from KY eliminated two other pairs (Tan Wei Han/Noriko Goh and Aisyah Latib/Cheong Hui Min) from the Singapore Sports School in the semi-finals.

I was hoping that the 4th rd cold be played after 6pm instead. All workers are working people. No point putting the juniors in the end. Half hour break shd be good enough for the seniors.

    Well done to the winners!

    Bdu11

Former Singapore National Men's Singles Champion, Hamid Khan's son, Muhamad Imran Khan (Elias Park Pr Sch), fought a tough 3 game battle with his current partner, Donovan Mui Jian Mun (Rosyth), during last year's age group tournament second round and won. This time the two combined well to beat Elton Lim Kay Ming and Shanicus Yee Bing Cai (Zheng & Lin Badminton Training Centre), 21-16, 21-11 (20m).

The Boys' U11 attracted 128 entries as did the other male events. Only the Girls' U15 had the some number, while all the other events recorded 64 entries each.

Here are some pics for the BDU11:

    Bull's Eye

During the Boys' U11, Donovan accidentally hit the shuttle on one of his opponent's eyes towards the end of the second game. The victim covered his eye in response and began to cry a little. Donovan and Imran went over and showed concern. Donovan must have said some consoling words to him and touched the boy's shoulders. Donovan even let him cry on his shoulders. ;)

It is good to know that the boys showed concern for each other and apologize for the accident. In the end, all went well, they shook hands and the incident was forgotten soon after when they received their prizes. There was no finger-pointing, incrimination or harsh words thrown. The adults also showed concern but remained calm and let the matter settle. It was a delight to watch how the incident was settled by the boys themselves. Such a spirit and exemplary behaviour should be applauded! :D

    Women's Doubles

Colleen Goh, who has tasted success in the past but not recently, partnered her regular, Karen Yuen, also from Raffles Junior College, to dispose of National University of Singapore's Foo Shi Yen and Michelle Lek without too much problem, 21-11, 21-11 in 22 mins.

Many of our girls are in a dilemma. They want to do well academically and to gain a place in university, but for Colleen, I'm sure she also wants to represent Singapore one day. Vanessa Neo, who is a local-born citizen. gave up her JC studies to join the national team full time about two years ago and is only now showing some promise through very hard work. So, it has not been easy for her.

The SBA is also taking this opportunity to publicise our senior players by presenting them at the prize ceremony. Hendry Saputra, Li Yujia, Ronald Susilo, Jiang Yanmei, Kendrick Lee and Li Li were seen shaking hands with the prize winners. The very young players must be very happy to see and shake hands with their local heroes! :)

    Girls' Doubles U11 Finals

Pigtail (Grace Chua, SAFRA Mt Faber ) and Ponytail (Lynn Chua, Tao Nan) paired up to defeat Galyle Lee, Tao Nan) and Gladys Goh (Gongshan) 21-11, 21-15 in just 17 min.

In June, it was Pigtail who beat Ponytail during the Singles Finals. So this is a happy occasion for the two to make amends.

Although the match did not last long, it was enough to thrill everybody present to watch the four tiny tots fight it out for the top prize. :D

Yes they have been supporting Singapore badminton for some time now. As mentioned, they are our local equivalent of 7-Eleven.
