Arrow Many of our CATS trainees have yet to master the basics

I have been with Chris' CCC Badminton coaching for a long time, at different locations, different times, different lifes, as it were. This gives me a bit more background to observe and compare.

In the 'old days' we used to train harder and focus more on the very basics. It took me years to appreciate the importance the drill "going backwards 4 steps" / "going forward 2 steps". We used to grumble and mutter and sweat a lot. But over time it really helped to develop a certain 'fluency'. After some good workout the dropshot drill suddenly became more reliable.

I appreciate that everyone has different expectations and skill levels. Nevertheless I keep wondering whether we could give it a try and basically restart from scratch, giving everyone a chance to focus more on basics.

Here's my suggestion. Let's split our session in two unevent parts. Part I is on basic fitness, movement, stroke production; the shorter Part II is related to playing the game.

The medium-term goal for Part I: get the dam' drop shot drill working, for everyone

The medium-term goal for Part II: get players position (and tactics) right, for everyone to play with everyone.

Sounds simple. Is not simple at all.

As to part I (about for 90 minutes):

    Week 1:
MAIN 1 learn the steps (going backwards),
MAIN 2 learn the underarm clear (so that the very 1st shot of the drill is right)
SIDE try to return with a drop shot

    Week 2
    REPEAT! the steps (going backwards)
REPEAT! the underarm clear, correct, improve
    MAIN 1 going forward
MAIN 2 focus on drop shot
SIDE try to do the bounce/netplay

    Week 3
REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT the steps, the underarm clear, the dropshot
    MAIN 1 bounce
MAIN 2 focus on the whole dropshot drill, movement with particular attention to speed / reach

    Week 4
MAIN refine the bounce (tumble, spin) for those who wish, otherwise keep focusing on quality of shots

    Week 5
MAIN holding the shot -- that's for me a natural progression and it emphasizes the need for speed, I always had the feeling that this lesson mainly improved the GENERAL quality of the drop shot because the mind is so much on moving FAST -- so it's easier reach the correct position.

(here it gets more vague because we have to see how we go and focus whatever needs most attention at this stage -- the next progression would be to incorporate the smash which is, in my eyes, easier than the drop shot).

As to Part II: (the shorter part of the session)

I suggest that we arrange very short games (with quick rotation of partners -- everyone should be comfortable to partner everyone). Chris to provide some ad-hoc comment, in important cases to halt the game for quick instruction. As one moves on and off one can observe and contemplate.

Focus for the time being on player's position (including the necessary alertness and speed of moving). As we get a bit better sorted we might focus on crucial things such as service and selection of shots.

    ***

Please don't get me wrong -- I enjoy the exercise and practice of our Badminton sessions as is -- all I suggest is to consider that there are alternatives. Chris might have some better ideas as to the fine-tuning and structuring.

    CC -- critique and comment?

    Cheers,
    Helmut

    .
    Hi helmut ,

    Thank you for your comments.

Yes, I agree with you. Many of our CCCers have yet to master the basics.

Like yesterday, Sunday 02-Aug-2009, many trainees still could see the difference (in the stroke production technique) between a slow smash and a dropshot.

We should return to basics. We should be able to perform our simple drills before we get into advanced subjects/topics.

    Cheers... chris-ccc

Hi mim_l ...... Thank you for the note.

Now, you'll need to consult Louis on how to do a good Overhead Backhand Clear. .

Question Couldn't switch on my computer: Somehow, it went dead

    .
    Hi Helmut,

This morning, Tuesday 04-Aug-2009, I had a scare.
I couldn't switch on my computer. Somehow, it went dead. Tried to ring you, but you were not available.

Now, everything seems to be OK. Fingers crossed that it won't happen again.
Otherwise, I shall bring it for you to have a check/inspection.

    Cheers... chris-ccc
