I read in kompas (INA) that one of reason taufik get avoid from the ban after what he did in HKO is he made popular badminton in the world, badminton without him is not interesting.

Maybe Taufik is more popular than badminton itself, like bali than Ina, that's why i think lindan will never "DEFEAT" him, i think lin dan made badminton is not popular because he won too much, the attractive player in badminton that people want to watch is Taufik, lcw, and peter gade

Oh please, no one person is greater than the game itself. There are many recreational players who don't even know who the top players are.

Talk that a person is greater than the sport is ridiculous.

I also read KOMPAS's today edition (25/09/06) but I can't find the reason/statement that said Taufik is badminton and bla...Which part of KOMPAS's sport column that said TH is more popular than bdm itself??Is it your own conclusion/contemplation or what?Come on,don't be so jealousy, LDW-LD-TH-PG are the great shuttlers that could make badminton exciting to watch,NOT TH is the only one.Be sportive, man!CHN is up now,INA must working hard to reach top condition like 90's era. This is homework for PBSI how can beat 'the Great Wall'? I guess the article (Catatan Bulutangkis) below bdm news in KOMPAS give some opinion and explanation what PBSI must do in next future, Consistency is the key word according the title of that article!

err, LD beat taufik in 2 games during 2005 sudirman final
LD beat taufik in ONE game during 2006 HKO. Ask yourself, how many match taufik can beat his opponent in one game?

cooler, you have a good point there :D

Anyway, I don't think Taufik is necessarily more popular or more liked, but he is better known than so many players simply because of the sensation he's causing by his controversial activites both on and off court.. its kind of like celebrities who will do anything for shock value -- but hey, I guess any publicity is good publicity, right?

i talked about this once with my coach in jakarta.. that taufik is the only indonesian athlete that is treated like celebrity. when we take a look at other players, we've never seen other players ever in the infotainment :p (might just be our low freq of watching tv though hehe)

i think he just has that different charisma that most other players don't have.. he also has "unique" attitude heh

    CATATAN BULU TANGKIS

Indonesia menjadi penonton.

China merebut empat gelar dan menyisakan satu gelar ganda campuran pada pasangan Inggris, Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms. (Pada tahun 1960-an hingga 1970-an, ganda campuran didominasi para pemain Eropa)

(isw)

Above: FRIENDLY FOES...Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat (right) shares
a joke with Malaysians Ewe Hock (centre) and Rashid
after their training sessions at the Putra Stadium
in Bukit Jalil yesterday (The star online)

Below: Taufik and Chong Wei after their quarter-final encounter at WC 2005.

Seems like Taufik has a good relationship with the malaysian players. Does anyone have the photos between Taufik and Peter Gade since Taufik said that Peter Gade is the player he respects and admires most. Mind to share here?

    more quacky than interesting.

by his (baihaki_as) logic, if BWF ban lin dan from playing, badminton would become popular?? So, if lin dan start winning less, he would become more popular too?

Taufik was a picture of humility when he was first talent-scouted and picked for the national team. However, when fame came his way-and with fame came power-his bargaining power started growing and reached its greatest height with the Olympic Gold and tyhe 2005 World Singles title.
But Taufik should look beyond his badminton days, into the future. After his badminton career is over, can he do something to help Indonesian Badminton with dedication? Maybe a seat on the Indonesian Badminton governing council, or a Taufik Badminton Academy, or something so worthwhile to badminton that we will see the Surdiman be one day replaced by the Taufik Cup-a more fitting tribute.

I'm not sure people from UK, Denmark and other European countries would agree. I don't think it's unusual for even county players in England not to be aware of players on the international scene. In fact I would guess that in England more people know Lin Dan than Taufiq
