BAM announces Asiad team

    TheStar

Heads will roll if the players and coaches fail to deliver the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) one gold medal target at the Asian Games, which will be held in Doha from Dec 1-15.

On Wednesday, the BAM president Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh announced their best team of eight-man and eight-woman for the Asiad after back-to-back meetings with the players and the coaching and training committee at Bukit Kiara.

In a surprise move, the BAM decided to give veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Kuan Beng Hong a second chance to prove themselves while Mohd Roslin Hashim had been recalled for national duty.

The others in the men's team are the usual suspects - Lee Chong Wei, Kuan Beng Hong and Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat.

In the women's team, Kuala Lumpur Racket Club (KLRC)'s Lim Pek Siah-Joanne Quay have been given the privilege to represent the country.

They were the only surprise in the women's team.

It is the first time that the BAM have considered women club players for an official tournament.

Nadzmi said that the players and coaches had promised to stay committed in training in a bid to mount strong challenge at the Doha Games.

"They - the players and coaches - know that some of them will have to go if they do not produce results," he said.

Nadzmi said that they took the longest time on Wednesday to decide on Tan Fook-Wan Wah's participation in Asiad following the duo's below-par performances in their third round defeat to Indonesian Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan at the World Championships in Madrid.

"For us, their failure in the world meet was the biggest disappointment. Following the feedback from the players themselves and the coaches, we find out that there have been communication problems," said Nadzmi.

Malaysia last won gold medals at the 1970 Bangkok Asiad.

The gold medallists were Datuk Punch Gunalan (men's singles), Gunalan-Ng Boon Bee (men's doubles) and Boon Bee-Slyvia Ng (mixed doubles).

    THE TEAM

KBH is definitely deserve a second chance base on his performance lately in the WC...From what he perform, actually his gap between CJ is not very big since CJ is the china future top man single...Unlike hafiz lose to LD easily..So,i think KBH will shine in the future if he train his skills properly...Ask for LWW/CTF,we can't denied their ability based on their past good performance, they have never lose in the Thomas Cup before...They always gain point for Mas..So,they are still on fire if they can lesser their stress..

Malaysia always perform well in Team Events. However they should have the same fighting spirit when they play in the individual events.

What do you mean that LCW ran away from trainning ?

I guess this will be the last chance for LWW/CTF, CTF especially. Too bad we have to recall Roslin because no one else that is better than him currently with WCH sidelined through injury. Don't know when will he recover.

Malaysia Boleh at Doha Games 2006 ???

    Hi cooler,

No, it's not violent... it's Work, Work, Work !!!

I actually like CTF's attitude when he plays. He seems to enjoy what he is doing/playing... but to many people, they think that his body language shows that he is not working hard enough... that he is not serious enough.

But you never know, if CTF starts to play in a less relaxed manner, he might end up performing worse. He could get stressed out.

Anyway, we hope... MALAYSIA BOLEH !!!

    Cheers... chris@ccc

WS and WD medal are already reserved by somebody, MS and MD has some tough competators (Cai/Fu, Taufik, LD, BCL, ......) from what i see, the only hope is XD. Is MA known for its XD strength? the only hope is that LCW stand up and support the entire team on his shoulder.

Man, heads are highly likely to roll.:D

Pei Tty-Eei Hui can deliver medal in Doha 2006

Badminton/Asian Games: Coach: Pei Tty-Eei Hui can deliver medal in Doha

MALAYSIA have not won a medal in the Asian Games women’s doubles event since 1970 and coach Cheah Soon Kit wants his charges Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui to end the drought in Doha.

In fact, Malaysia have only two women’s doubles bronze medals to show from the Asian Games — the first through Tan Gaik Bee-Ng Mei Ling in 1962 and Rosalind Singha Ang-Teow Siew Bee in 1970 — but Soon Kit believes Pei Tty-Eei Hui can achieve a medal finish in Doha.

The reason? Asian Games rules only permit two pairs per country for individual events, thus allowing overwhelming favourites China to win a maximum of two medals.

This leaves two medals to be fought for and Soon Kit wants his players to take the initiative and make up for the World Championships disappointment in Madrid.

Pei Tty-Eei Hui had the opportunity to make the last four in Madrid but lost to China’s No 4 Zhang Yawen-Wei Yili in the quarter-final.

China clinched all four medals in the World Championships with Gao Ling-Huang Sui taking the title.

"They (Pei Tty-Eei Hui) have won the Commonwealth and Sea Games gold and now the target is to win a medal in the Asian Games. They have an outside chance of achieving it," said Soon Kit.

"The fact that there are only two pairs from China will increase our chances of winning a medal. As long as we can avoid the two pairs from China in the quarter-final stage, Pei Tty-Eei Hui can get into the medal round.

"Their focus now is to become tactically wise and have more patience especially when they play an attacking game. This is where they always make mistakes against top pairs as they try too hard to kill off the rallies and are disappointed if they fail to do so."

Among other pairs Pei Tty-Eei Hui will have to contend with are South Korea’s Lee Kyung Won-Lee Hyo Jung, Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin of Taiwan, Saralee Thungthongkam-Satinee Changkrachangwong of Thailand and Indonesia’s Gresya Polii-Jo Novita.

Pei Tty-Eei Hui made their first breakthrough when they won the women’s doubles gold in the 2005 Manila Sea Games and then clinched the Commonwealth Games gold medal in Melbourne in March.

In order to receive a good draw, Pei Tty-Eei Hui must also regain their position in the top eight after they dropped to ninth position last week.

Again we're all requesting and expecting LCW to shoulder the whole nation's hopes and expectations. Sad, isn't it ?

One of the ways how China's badminton players manage to do well most of the time is because they support each other by forming a so called 'great wall' and beat other competitors for their team mates. So it may not really matter in the end who actually wins the tournament, but the country !

Of course its a great thing to be THE one to win it, but at least the country does !

Malaysia should be reaching out for more talents for eg. from all states, instead of just concentrating on a few. Start sending them to minor tournaments young, and we should see better results in time to come.

INA also will send 18 shuttlers to participate in forthcoming 15th Doha AG and they are:

    - MD : Luluk/Alvent - Markis/Hendra
    - WD : Jo/Gress - Lita Nurlita/Natalia Poluakan
