Hey everyone, i just recently played a singles match for my school and i completely got destroyed because of one reason... the LIGHTS. My opponent kept on doing high clears that i should've been able to return but our new school gyms have the brightest lights you could think of (industrial). I was literally blinded! Has anyone every had this problem and if so, is there a way to avoid it or cope with it?

Why don't you clear back and see if your opponent have the same problem with the lights. Blind your opponent.

If the shuttle flys into the light, simply step to one side and let the bird fall a bit lower then hit a flat drive. That should stun your opponent.

happens to me all the time, none of the gyms I ever play in are designated solely for badminton. Its a basketball/volleyball gym with some badminton fields taped in :D It serves the purpose though. Yes the lighting does bother me, they install these huge 5 feet wide bright lights that span out across the roof and if u accidentally look into one well.......good luck. I got used to it though, not much else you can do :p

Probably the best way is if you eventually get used to the speed at which it is coming and you are able to anticipate the birdie. Practice, to the point where you get a pretty good idea of where you have to be to be able to clear it back, or to make a good return shot. Also, if it was at your school, shouldn't you have a slight edge, since you practice in that gym?

If you think it's hard to play with lights in your eyes, try playing with the air conditioning blowing the shuttle side to side. The pros have to play with the lights in their eyes and watch the shuttle get blown around in the air. Best example is the 2005 world championships in Anaheim pond.
