They say you don't ask, you won't get the answer. Just an opinion on the topics in Chit Chat, I kinda wonder what sort of restriction or regulation exist to guide the kind of topics that can be created or forbidden. Take two instances:- - The first being the Remembrance of 9/11 thread by I think Eurasian, that was promptly deleted by the time a reply appeared. It got me wondering about what sort of problem did it got itself into? - The second was yesterday in ants' thread regarding Singapore's act to increase sexual awareness and probably drive amongst the people of the island republic and the reply to that were done in proper way ie low birth rate, immigration etc. So, the latter got deleted because...? I wonder if the mods actually think the average intelligence of the people in here are below satisfactory level to properly debate on the issue without raising contentious points. Or are they just too easily offended by the word '***'? Not that we're discussing anti-semitism or the situation in Afghanistan are we? Are we that shallow that intelligent debates apart from what sort of racquet is good for smashing is now a taboo? Just a thought, like. Wasn't at all upset at why the topics above were deleted, just very curious to what exactly got them removed in the first place. And no, "because it's not a badminton-related topic" is not acceptable, as is expected to come out from some members here - the forum says 'Come here for all off-topic discussions!'.
there are a few areas which are not allowed. - sexual, pornographical discussions - political or controversial current events - religious discussion and anything else we deemed inappropriate to a general audience. and as usual, we reserve the rights to add more in the future.
I knew this would come up sometime or another. Wilfred, Since it's me that closed both threads I'll add further insight. The assumption is that people will behave themselves on the forum. The majority of people do that. Certain threads are red flag signals for inappropriate/undesirable behaviour. The history of BF and other forum boards show this can always happen. Otherwise, why do other forums have mods? Obviously, some people may be unaware of the implications of a thread they have posted. Sure, this is no problem. But we still have to manage the forum. Anything that can be potentially turned into political mudslinging, flaming, inapporopriate behaviour towards minors will be carefully scrutinised. The decision to close a thread is not taken lightly. We rely on your self judgement to what is socially acceptable to the general population. To be on the safe side, it would be better to be conservative. We do not want to give an exhaustive list of what or what is not acceptable. What would be the point? If you really want to have off topic discussions of that nature, go to other forums or set up a forum board yourself. Prevention is better than the cure and for some threads, we can recognise it early. For other threads, they 'evolve'/'metamorphosize' to undesriable characteristics and they get closed later! Please PM me if the issue needs to be taken further.
I must admit that I was expecting to get the kind of elaboration as mentioned with care by cheung and I do admit the merits of a controlled environment is definitely warranted. I understand well enough that prevention is a good thing and the conservative way is the safest. Agreed. Perhaps the mods could lock and tell why it was so instead of getting them deleted without saying anything but surely, that wasn't the real reason I wrote. I wrote this enquiry because I was interested to have a look at the insight of the mainly Asian demographics on world issues for example. It's a whole new different audience in here. I was interested to see what everybody had to say after following a thread on RAWK regarding Lebanon in the past three months with inputs from our Lebanese, Israeli and Arab members and the amount of insight is truly enlightening. A lot more than what I got from reading the papers and listening to the media. One member from Haifa posted just 30 minutes after hearing the siren wail from the incoming of another Katushya missile. Yet, I am well aware that this is not allowed in BC so I didn't post anything related to that here. I am in no way interested in sedition or anything that is bound to create ill will and unrest amongst members (apart from the already divided opinion on which is the better between Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei). But as said, we can assume people will behave but that's just an assumption. I may, but others may not I guess. The only regret is that we're missing out on many potentially good discussion topics which are considered taboo to the society over here in fear of things getting out of hand. I reckon the likes of Lazybuddy, ants, yourself, kwun etc would be good sparring partners of the mind regarding issues that are happening in the world. It is well understood that the mods intend to keep things under control and I respect that. So, to wrap this up - would talking about the BBC Panorama football bung investigation be a potential troublemaker if I do talk about it in the football season thread? Thanks Kwun and cheung for your clarifications. Or maybe I should go out more often.
