I heard from my stringer yesterday that Emms and Robertson have switched Ashaway strings from Microlegend to Flex 21 Micro. Can anyone else confirm this? (Apparently, Carlton asked them to change because of the colour of Microlegend -- the logo on their strings wasn't showing up as well as they liked )
I think they have switched, but my impression was that it was because Ashaway had given them a sponsorship deal to promote their fancy new string which is meant to create more string, rather than for any other reason. But I am not certain about this.
That seems a bit more plausable, though the comment about Carlton did come from someone associated with Ashaway (sorry, can't mention names).
According to the Ashaway website they use Powergut 65. Though the pics I've seen of them don't really support that, Powergut strings have very obvious color schemes. Anyways, if Carlton really wants to increase their product visibility they should get a website up!!! It's been years since they've had one.
I've contacted Carlton about that and they have stated that it is a shame that they do not and that thery are trying to remedy this. But honestly, how long does it take?
It shouldn't take long at all. They have all the press photos and literature for the brochures, they just have to put it up on the web. It's a real slap in the face to Carlton supporters...of which there are increasingly fewer.
It's a real shame about the website. I managed to find a US one, but it's rubbish and doesn't have any of the new racquets on it. Hope they sort their act out soon.
According to Ashaway Robertson and Emms use powergut, I know the colouration may not be right but dont forget you can easily paint the strings as you would when stenciling them.
A couple of months ago, I spoke with Ashaway and the topic of what string Emms and Robertson used came up. PG65 was the answer. Anyway, that was a few months ago, things can change. However, if they were to change string, I doubt they would go from PG65 to Flex 21 Micro as it does not perform nearly as well as PG65 (Neon), and PG65 Power to a less extent.
Oh, if anything, I believe Emms and Robertson would switch to MicroPower in white. I feel MicroPower is currently the most underrated string. Roughly, it has 95% the performance of BG80 and 95% the durability of BG65 and holds tension quite well. Viper strings his rackets mostly with MP now, at 30-32lbs., with minimal tension loss. If you haven't tried MP, you should give it a try.
I always want to try Ashaway strings, unfortunately the choice is very very limited here. After I read some Ashaway string review, I was so interested in PG65. I tried to find Ashaway string, but PG65 is not available in the city where I live. Actually I did find this MicroPower string, but I was not interested in it at the moment. The name 'MicroPower' somehow gave me impression that this string is not good, you know... MicroPower sounds like lack of power or something. Perhaps that's why it becomes underrated? I will try this string next time since it is recommended by Sir DinkAlot By the way, do you think it will perform well if I use my usual tension 22x24 lbs?
I have not tried MP at 22x24. The lowest I've tried is 24/26.5 and it performed very well. I've noticed the higher you string MP, the better it players. For instance, 30x33 was first-rate.
Ironically, I went to a sports store a while ago and browsed through some ashaway strings. I thought MP can only be strung to a max of 30 lbs? That's what the package says at the back. Or is it the same as rackets wherein they say a recommended tension of say 26-28lbs but such racket can actually be strung up to 32-34lbs? I'm a bit confused.
It was someone from Ashaway that told me they had changed. Apparently they were using Flex 21 Micro at the Worlds. Looking at the string specs it did seem a strange choice. I think I heard that they tested a few different strings and that was the one they preferred.
Weird. I tried Flex 21 Micro and just thought it was average (although I do admit I didn't pay much attention to the string). If anything, I thought they would go with MicroPower.
Well, I recently got my two AT800DE restrung, one with BG80 and the other with Flex 21 Micro, both at 24lb. Haven't had a chance to try them out yet but will finally get the chance tonight. Will see how they compare.
