BEIJING: World number seven Chen Hong has been left out of the Chinese badminton squad for the Doha Asian Games even though he won the China Open for the second successive time in Guangzhou on Sunday.

Chief coach Li Yongbo said that he wanted to give younger players the chance to play in top level international competitions as part of the preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“We can only send eight men and eight women and the players must play both team and individual competitions,” Yongbo was quoted as saying by the Beijing Times yesterday.

“It was a big headache for us when we were choosing the squad.”

World champion Lin Dan, as well as Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai, who are ranked fourth and fifth in the world, will feature in the men's singles at the Asiad in December.

“As a veteran, I can now relax to play and enjoy the game,” Chen Hong, who will be 27 next month, told Sina.com

Maybe LYB got pissed when he decided that BCL is to win the China Open but got stuffed by CH. Just my 2 cents.

didn't CH tried to retire from national men single 2times, yet rejected?

if this is true, no point for LYB to be mad at him since he is the one keeping him in the team

Sorry I've probably been using SendSpace too much that my eyes/mind will react when I see those words.

Too bad he can't "trick" his way into the squad. [IMG]

The way I see it, it's getting increasingly difficult for Chen Hong to get an Open Slot for these kind of events (Asian Games, Olympics, Thomas Cup etc) with so many people (youngsters) downloading (coming through).

Excluding CH in the China Team is a wrong decision, I guess.

CH is absolutely stronger than Bao and Chen Jin, even Lin Dan.

Here is the order of the players according to their strength:
    1. CH
    2. LD
    3. Bao
    4. Chen Jin

    I would rate.
    1. LD
    2. CH
    3. CJ
    4. Bao

Very interesting about CH, CJ, Bao is that they different strengths in different areas. Top in skill is Bao (but mentally less strong), CH got the power but gives away runs of points, CJ is pretty good allround but looks like still on a learning curve in playing matches.

taken from previous post of mine, china is willing to ditch short term gain for long term gain. LYB see beijing OG as highest priority. Although CH is #1 or #2 for china now, the chinese management want to jam in as much international experience to the potential OG candidates than CH. LYB still have the option to insert CH in 2008 if the BCL or CJ doesn't measure up. CH is a proven product, he make an excellent backup if LYB want to change his mind on the other 3.

well as mentioned in the article, it's to give the younger players more exposure. 27 in China is considered close to retirement age already....

    I rate them as follows:

    1. Lin Dan
    2. Chen Hong
    3. Bao Chunlai
    4. Chen Jin
    5. Chen Yu

Heck, I believe Xia Xuanze is still better than Chen Yu.

after watching the 3 MS final games, chen yu pluses are power and reach. He isn't as refined, almost opposite end of BCL.

PS: i take back about what i've said chen yu is more lethal than lcw in the world cup thread. I only watched the last half of the 3rd game (LD vs CY) when i said that. :D

It would be a tough decision.

For other countries, deciding who to send is a lot easier.

Chen Hong is a good sport for his attitude on this.

I understand that they're giving the younger players a bit of experience. But it's not every day that you get a chance to play in the Asian Games. Surely they could allow CH to play in something as important as this? The younger players will get plenty of other opportunities to gain experience between now and the 2008 OG.

You had to remember that Olympic Games is much more important than Asian Games. And CH already play for China team in Asia Games 4 years ago.

This is another tough part being in China team.

If CH wanted to earn Olympic spot, he had to started to win against non China players more. Ih he can win Denmark Open 2006, and consistently winning over Peter Gade, Taufik and LCW in next events he will probably be choose by LYB in Olympic.

    But I highly doubt it.

Chinese best MS against other players from other countries still only LD. Now he had better records against all top players in the world (his teammates not included) including Taufik. (Thomas and Sudirman Cup matches included)

CH's chance has expired. He didn't make it good 4 year ago when he was needed at that time as Chinese ace (even he failed to reach bronze in Individual). Now, time to LD-CJ-BCL to take the challenge and CH should be understand well for this reality.
