Recently at Killarney Community Centre, during drop-in times there have been numerous accounts of cellphones and wallets being stolen. The suspect is an asian male, around 25 years of age, around 5 feet 7-9" with a bad haircut, and a racquet with an enternal tjoint strung with some sort of purple sting. He has appeared at times during the drop ins when the items have been stolen and hes does not play badminton. Please watch out for him and if you see him or know who he might be contact me. He was last seen wearing a grey t-shirt but have also been waring a black t-shirt.
that sounds like the same guy at Hastings Community Centre on tuesday nights. He would come in and just sit and watch people play, wear his badminton player costume. Im not sure what raquet he was holding though. Any body else think this is a good enough reason to start putting our good old broken/ retired comorades back in your badminton bag...
This sounds like a case of having someone keeping an eye on this person from a quiet corner and when they do steal, dole out a serious pounding.
Unfortunately, serious pounding on this guy means he can sue under tort law for assault and battery. The pounding might also trigger criminal prosecution. The wiser thing to do is to have a group of buddies and perform citizen arrest until the police arrives.
Hasn't happened yet. He steals or attempts to steal stuff, I have the right to stop him. He resists, I have the right to defend myself. I jump him out of the blue - well, yeah, that's a different story.
Defense is a tricky area. Generally, speaking, defense can not exceed the level of threat encountered. There are tons of rulings from the BC courts.
A buddy had his wallet stolen at a Sat drop in at Trout Lake. His description of their suspect matches this guy. How about someone take a pic of this guy the next time he appears at a drop in and post it here.
in criminal court, dont u need witness? what if all other players think that guy deserves the pounding deny seeing the actual deed? What if u make a citizen arrest, conduct trial and hand out sentencing in the washroom
i'm giving a heads up to BC'er in BC to watch out for this guy, as he goes around drop ins and steals stuff, so far he's stolen three times before we caught on. thanks for all the replies
We have bait cars in Greater Vancouver, why don't someone "set him up" with a wallet, cel phone, & racquet in which all serial numbers (including the paper money) are photographed & inventoried as evidence? This way when he is caught red-handed, there is no dispute to the stolen goods. Cheers!
The really annoying thing is that even if this guy is caught red-handed with a bagfull of stolen stuff, he'll probably be out in 24 hrs. Just look at those car crooks caught stealing a bait car. One had been caught dozens of times already and the only time they were able to keep him in jail was when he killed someone in a crash trying to flee from the cops. With all these feel-good judges setting crooks free, doling out some "street justice" looks good. You could always say he tried to resist when you tried to do a citizen's arrest.
That's a major problem with the Canadian justic system. The victims can't just gang up on this guy and give him (presumably) a good workout without legal consequences.
I reccomend don't do this. We don't want BC in any kind on legal dispute! Just take care with your personal belongings at all times, wherever you are. Rats only live where there is food. or in badminton tersm and to paraphrase Morten Frost "take away their weapons and they can't harm you"
In the event of Halloween... who would know if he was bleeding for real with an axe/ raquet lobed into the side of his head .

It's much better to have the police arrest him rather than take matters into your own hands. Once a person is tried and found guilty, your sports centre can justifiably ban him from entering the premises. Other sports centres will be entitled to do the same and you would also be entitled to name him and shame him (as having been found guilty) in other ways, such as posting his details on a website. You could also corner him in a dark alley after he was found guilty!
