British celebrity chef, currently in the U.S., wants American schools to stay away from fatty snacks and foods. He claims that the British are the most unhealthy people in Europe, but the Americans top everyone by being the most unhealthy in the world. Americans are also the most obese in the world.
Jamie suggests that an American chef is more suited to start a crusade in American schools to replace their current fatty foods with more healty ones.

I think it already started, but maybe not with a celebrity chef.
I saw a program on TV quite a while ago (pre Jamie Oliver school thing) about a drive for healthy food in schools in the US. How Coca-Cola and the like would give money to schools but only if the schools installed Coca-Cola vending machines. How all the sugar and additives made the kids hyper.
One school took out all the vending machines and cooked meals at the school with fresh ingredients and the kids behaviour improved.

I wouldn't be surprised if he nicked the idea from America.

I'm surprised that he made the statement.
With movies like Supersized Me etc... no wonder many Americans are obese. And many others will follow if we dont change our diet.

i think the average adult weight for americans is the highest in the world, followed, increasingly closely, by the UK.

I think u just prove to all of us that the general public amercian like yourself don't understand nutrition at all. U had been brain washed by food marketing and media that healthy food taste bad and junk food taste good. This explain the sad state of amercian/UK health of today. Problem is further compounded by today's physicans lacking knowledge of nutrition at all plus that they r mostly brain washed by drug companies as well.

Back to ur example, both rib eye steak and spinach are unprocessed food, so both are not junk foods. Actually, depending how it is cooked, the rib eye steak is more nutritionous than the spinach so i pick the steak because purely on nutrition reason.

Maybe it's just lucky me but i find junk foods taste ok to aweful while healthy foods taste ok to great. I dunno about u but i much rather partake in a 10 course chinese banquet than at sit in with unlimited choices at the McDonald.

Just follow the McDonald, KFC, Pizza Hut expansion trend, US, then europe, and now asia, the result is.....see below

I pick both the steak and veggie :D. Also, add bran + grounded flax seed + soya mlik to regular diet at 2 serving a day.

I think it would be an over simplification to say that americans are overweight.

In fashion, the size 0 dress originated in the US
A lot of the major sports brands are based in the US
College sports is a big thing in the US

There are a lot of very thin women and muscular men in the US.

I have to agree that most of the junk food we eat has its roots in the US though!

You're missing the point... there's nothing wrong with a lean Rib Eye Steak ;)

It's the extras that cause the americans to become overweight, i.e. the supersized fries, supersized softdrink, deserts. Fries are really unhealthy, then in America, they like to put cheese on their fries too.... actually they like to put cheese on everything :p

The % of Obesity in USA exceeds most other countries in the world, and there was a report that Obesity was causing a problem even for army recruitment/training, something that never happened to the US armed forces before...

If you say there are a lot of thin people and make reference to the popularity of 'college sports', then you are right, but you're focusing on the socio-economic 'elite'. Obesity is much more prevalent in the US in the underclass.

The attempt to move schools from fattening food has been attempted and reattempted in the past 20 or so years and it still hasn't made much progress. The problem is not the school itself, but the surrounding. During high school if I were to walk home, I would pass by: 7-11, macdonalds, jack in the box, 4 gasstations with junk food. It also doesn't help that, like cooler said, schools don't teach crap about nutrients. Then on top of that make junk and fattening foods more convient and cheaper. So it's not just the schools fault, it's the whole of america. Especially when you make a salad cost 5$ and a supersized burger meal 3$, which would you choose on a student budget?

I've only ever spent a few days in the US, but that was around the Santa Monica area and I remember thinking that everyone looked quite lean. I was quite disappointed as I was looking forward to poking fun at some fatties to make me feel better about my own expanding girth!

I wonder if there are geographical differences within the US? Would I be right in thinking that people from the southern states tend to be larger than people from the northern states?

Personally I've haven't met many obese americans. Maybe they tend not to fly or at least not to Europe. The ones I have met tend to be of a fairly normal size. However, some of the boys and girls I remember seeing on the Jerry Springer Show.......huuuuuuge!!!

LMAO! Crosscourt, Santa Monica is one of he healthiest (small) cities in the U.S. Why? It's where many athletes and movie stars live. It's a trendy city where looking good and staying fit is always in fashion. Santa Monica is atypical.

There is a huge difference geographically.

Anyways, since we're on a "diet/eating" topic, i found a link to something sort of "fun" but relates to food and eating habits..Let's see how many of you guys can get them right..enjoy!;):D:cool:

i would say the underclass and middle class as well, in general.

To add, car makers having hard time improving fuel efficiency because they can't lighten up but make cars heavier due to frame stress cause by heavier and heavier drivers.
Airlines are toying the idea of charging passengers and luggage by the weight.

Yes, healthy foods costs are higher, sometime, much higher, plus it also spoil faster and therefore required refrigeration or heating, plus required more human preparation time, which all further add to the cost.
