Why is Yonex called YY?

    well i dont understand it, only thing i can think of is that if you put yonex down twice and the Y's are next to each other it makes YY.

    Yonex was originally Yoneyama. the name of the founder and chairman.

    thus, YY.

    I thought YY stood for Yang Yang, and got really confused about why Yang Yang made all the racquets Yonex did :eek:

    Gut hunch says changing the name back to Yoneyama would cost them 30% of their sales...

    Yup, Yonex used to be called Yoneyama and I had an original Yoneyama 8000 (circa 1975) with the wooden handle at the top of the grip and the fabric/plastic cover over the base of the grip. Later models of the 8000 had a plastic top and bottom on the grip. I am not sure when the name changed but I am guessing around 1978 or so.

    wow, back in the days before I even existed, hmm, now come to think of it, my first racquet was a yoneyama. :D

    My first steel racquet was a Yoneyama 8000 and now I couldn't find it :( I wonder if anyone still has one and kindly display an image of it for all of us here?

    Maybe I can find my ancient Yoneyama 8000 and take a picture. My camcorder has lousy digital stills though and I need to scan in prints from my SLR to get digital pics. Anyway it will be a while assuming I can get my ancient original YY 8000.

    Hey you guys are right the name stands for Yoneyama and back in the earlier days the name the International distributors purchased product from was Yoneyama Export. The name was deemed to be too long and didn't sound too attractive to some parts of the world, hence the shortening to Yonex.

    Just a side note since we are at the YY topic. You might notice that the Yonex logo "Y Y" has also changed over the years. I won't point out what but go and do some research and you might notice it.

    i only notice one change. from what we call the old YY logo to the current new YY logo. has there been more before the "old"?
