    I hear it's - 50 C (-58 F) in Calgary with the wind chill factor. Holy molly. Vancouver is - 5 C (23 F).

    Wouldn't regular motor oil freeze at - 50 C?

    There was a snowstorm in Vancouver. 15 cm in less than 24 hours.

    wind chill factor applies to human only:p
    my calculation got -40C not -50C. Your quote might came from the old method. On October 1, 2001, Canada officially began reporting windchill using the new formulation. The Americans followed suit on November 1. Here are the formulas:

    Twc = 13.112 + 0.6215 Ta -11.37 V^0.16 + 0.3965 Ta V^0.16
    Ta in C, V in km/hr

    Twc = 35.74 + 0.6215 Ta -35.75 V^0.16 + 0.4275 Ta V^0.16
    Ta in F, V in mph

    I like to see a 'wet wind chill' factor. Could be useful, for example humid vancouver or to mariners exposed to freezing spray conditions, AYE, CARAMBA !

    yes, even a steel racket can snap at these low temperature;)
    the nylon string will go snap crackle and pop:D

    For those who hasn't experienced cold weather, here are some highlights:
    - when u walk outside, every step has the crunching sound
    - when u breath in air thru the nose, your nose hairs will freeze, until u exhale:p

    Oh and don't forget to check your ears once a while if you're walking outside...it/they may have dropped off. :D

    My first job offer when I first came to Canada was a computer job in Calgary.
    I was all set to accept it until I was told that it was so cold during winter out there that if you pee outside, your pee turns to icicle before it hits the
    ground. :eek: So I decided to stay in rainy Vancouver.

    glad to know all the outside pee'ers are in vancouver:D:p

    more calgary experience:
    -i just heard from the news that one guy froze to death last nite.
    - even with winter gloves on, u have to keep moving them or your fingers will go numb. Time to switch to winter mitts like the eskimos.
    - summer tires will feel like flintstones rock tires
    - many cars can't start, even city buses which parked indoor, some will go down due to the cold.
    - overhead plane noise sound would be hi fidelity quality:)
    - indoor air can be drier than that in sahara desert.

    When you're out skiing/boarding and you need to go, you go behind the nearest tree on the side of the run. You obviously can't do this in Calgary or johnson's gonna get frostbite. :D :D :D I wonder how they do it in Banff?

    Hahaha, know someone that just moved to Calgary for 2 years for Shell. Plans to commute to work on bycycle ;)

    Anyhoo since there is no main thread about weather: we've just about completed the wettest summer since 1906 :cool:. ~80 hours less sunshine (525 <> 608) and 7 instead of 21 days with temp. over 25C ... yay!

    Holy dredging up old thread, demolidor! :eek:

    Sorry that it's been dismal in Tulipland. Perhaps your friend will enjoy biking in Calgary's winters, just for the change.;)

    Speaking of weather, here on the extreme east of Canada's mainland we caught just an edge of Tropical Storm Irene. It was such a non-event that at it's "height" late on Sunday night, I took a bike ride after work. Thought I was quite clever to let the wind help me up some hills .... but coming down a steep city street I caught a couple crosswind gusts that pushed me right into the middle of the road. Stayed on my wheels, but I was sure glad the storm warnings had kept traffic light. Otherwise it was Fidget pancakes!

    :D Bike Skillz :cool: Reminds me I still have to get a new set of tires ... if they have the particular ones in stock again anywhere (~€70 for the pair :rolleyes: iirc)

    At least the Fall has started of nice, warm and sunny :). Actually 23C max is rather nice, above it it's just warm and humid. Already noticing today at ~24C ... (probably cause it was ~13C a few days ago ;))

    I know there is a bike thread somewhere around here ...

    OT back to tyres: original choice - http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/bicycle/themes/mtb/cc_marathon/Race King/raceking_en.html

    Interesting alternative - http://www.conti-online.com/generat...s/mtb/specialists/df2/doublefighterII_en.html

    [IMG]

    Will give the semi-slicks a try for once :cool:. Much cheaper as well I see ... (those Race Kings are €40 a piece and DF II only €16, and of course as always cheaper over at the neighbours I expect ;). :eek: Will probably get both anyway since I would've after the "winter"
