cracking skin
Due to the cold/dryweather and extra absorbent overgrip I've been having a problme with myskin cracking and splitting near thumb and index finger - bad enough that it bleeds. Kind of annoying sensation too.
Been trying this neutrogena hand moisturizer, but it's not working worth a damn.
Any suggestions?

Nivea soft is pretty good but it's for minor to moderate skin cracking/moisturizing.
In the GWN, you have severe weather conditions, you may need to try something more extreme or even prescription.
I would consult with a dermatologist. My friend is one, I won't see him until tomorrow but I can ask for you what's the best OTC solution...

I run into that problem a lot during winter season biking. What I like to do is use lip balm on my finger tips while taking extra doses of bamboo aloe(i'll have to look up the translation). I also try to wear gloves when I can and avoid harsh chemicals such as some dish detergent. My doctors advice was to keep circulation going in your hand as much as possible.

Hey Vining. I have a similar problem of dry skin in the same areas during this time of year. I use the following cream (I think shoppers carries it):
St. Ives Renewal Cream w/ alpha and beta hydroxy.
after reading the back i just noticed it's a facial moisturizer...hmm...oh well..i find it works. I'm sure the other's mentioned above are just as good.
Glysomed comes in a green tubular like bottle and is also very good. They also come in small travel sizes too! http://www.glysomed.ca/
Most of the time i just consult with the female ladies at the badminton club about hand cream..they usually know more =)

While this is true, women have different pH balance then men. What works for them may not work for us.

I know this moderate to severe case because otherwise, V-Wolff would not be posting. He's a man's man.

I grew up in very dry area so my skin is like leather at the best of times ( unlike my wife who grew up in the moist coast and has moisturizers up the ying yang living here in dry Alberta).
it split on me again lifting weights at lunch. Might have to soak this sombitch in motor oil...

Vaseline or Petroleum jelly cures it right up ... leave it on overnight or as long as you can until it heals.

I would suggest to get yourself a pair of 100% white cotton gloves (like the ones for military or for special ceremonies), and wear them when you go to sleep after applying the skin cream/lotion.
The gloves will help keep the lotion from spreading and keep the moisture around the skin.
Cheers!

Did you try the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream or just a normal Neutrogena hand cream ? Acutally the Norwegian Series is the best what I have tried until so far.
But in your case I would suggest you to rest your hands until it is fully recovered and avoid straining them too much.

have you tried taking a small strip of hockey tape or athletic tape, putting that on the dry patch of skin (area prone to callous, etc), and over top of that, a single layer of electrcial tape.
i personally hate it, it affects my entire game, as i guess i rely on my fingers a lot but a few people i play with or see play love it.
and.... well, the usual, hand cream in the morning, before you head to bed, during the day after a session, and wear gloves while outdoors. and let your hands warm up inside the gloves before you head outside or take them off after getting indoors.
alberta winters really are a pain.

Hi Vining,
It's Barnett...I had the exact same problem for months and it hurt like hell.
I did use glysomed and it worked...just remember, it takes a while before your hand is totally healed...and during the day, you need to moisturize constantly.
