Default Chronic back pain flares up in badminton

I have had back pain for 5 years, it flares up when I am playing badminton, what happens is that the shoulder blade rubs against my ribcage (I can crunch my shoulder baldes quite loudly) and it ends up with specific shots like smashes and clearance shots being painful.

It isn't bad when I don't ply often but this week I played 4 times so my back is in pain

    What can I do?

Um, I did read that sticky first

Well, I have been to a doctor, got referred to chiropractor (I had to pay though), offered pain killers. After that not working, my gp said there isn't much else to do, unless I am willing to pay even more money to see a physiotherapist. I have no money.

I was just wondering is anyone else had back pain and also play badminton?

I play badminton and I have back, knee, wrist, and ankle pain. Aren't there any free physiotherapists your doctor can recommend to you? Even a couple visits would be helpful to identify what you can do to help yourself of that pain.

Free? Yeh right. As long as I'm not gonna drop dead they don't wanna invest any money into me.

Besides, I went to a chiropractor for a few months, it was expensive as hell, treatment was only 20 minutes a week and he expected my back to get better from that? No, maybe if I got two treatments a day, I don't understand how my body can get better like that, especially at $50 a pop.

Though I agree, maybe seeing a physiotherapist a few times to get a good understanding of by problem would be great.

Hmm, yes, a good idea I think..

hm, they are expensive, initial consultations tend to be abour 45 ($80) and returning sessions about 30 ($55).

Its a lot of money that I, a student can't afford.I might investigate with getting general sports massages on a weekly basis, anyone have experiecnes with this?

I actually have experience with this message therapists too. I went to 3 different ones for the same problem. This was also for my back and the last one i went to helped a lot more than the previous ones although very painful. My back is a lot better but still weak from lack of strengthening.

Go to an athletic therapist... once or twice. Get a tissue massage and ultrasound to break up scar tissue. But most importantly, get a list and demonstration of exercises which will prevent the injury from worsening/recurring. From what I can tell about your situation, strengthening surrounding muscles/tendons seems like it could be beneficial in preventing abrasion. Good luck.

That's not what you asked in your original post.

I'd say maybe have a pro look at your technique and maybe modify it so it minimizes back pain.

sorry to say that you can no longer go hardcore on every game.. only play hard when you are desperate to win eg.competition.. in social game dont bother
I suffer the same thing as you, mine is 3 years already.. and even sitting down here typing I can feel my back aching.. went to DR to get referal for MRI scan.. till today haven't got one, they will wait till you are paralysed and only then you can get something done when dealing with backache
So.. rest more... do more stretches.. thorough warm up, if pain its best avoid badminton

I've just been practising clearance shots, my back is killing me. Not only that, my forearm is stonger than my overhead clear, which is odd.

    I also lost 6 shuttles.

I guess so, will have to now, just knocked my last two shuttles opposite so I have none left.

When you clear, do you use all your energy? that appears to be the case with me. Sometimes if I get a good practise run I got the technique so i din't hit it hard like I do, but in a game it is not so.

You can only rest. I used to suffer back pain a lot more. The only thing to do was to rest. Funnily. it doesn't affect me in the last few years. I play less but my technique is better, both of which should be helping.

I have had back pain when I played long single games before, but not lately. However, I played a hard double game today and my back was killing me. I had to quit and can still feel it right now.

In fact, I am here looking for any advice on back-wrap or back-brace that you see the pros use. My coach said it might help. Anyone tried that and any recommendation?
