Have we started to get it more frequently recently? Is there a RoboMod, like I see in other forums, that will automatically quarantine posts/threads if a certain number of users Alert it?
Don't worry, just ignore, it's not a big deal, just let the Mods find the SPAM when they do and remove. Compared to other Forums, BC has the least amount of SPAM I have ever seen. Kudos to the BC Moderators!
I don't think there is anything that can be done that wouldn't harm the people we are there for. BF cannot help people registering, posting spam and not visiting again. We do ban the offenders anyway however. One thing some other forums do is that people have to register, but cannot fully join (IE. post etc..) for a certain amount of days. this would reduce it, but would lose members joining when they have a question to ask, or to join in during a major tournament as they may not return again (eg touranemt over or someone else answered question on another forum. It is getting a lot more frequent these days though, but as Dink says, try to ignore it.
The mods can't be on here all the time, but there's pretty much always somebody on here. If things were quarantined after, say, 5-10 alerts, they'd be off the forum in minutes rather than hours.
i have to admit, it is quite an annoyance. especially for us moderators, who have been quite diligently getting rid of the spams (thanks to Cheung, James and Mag for their hardwork). however, for the short term, we will have to continue operating this way. and i am going to look into whether there are more robust ways to deal with these spams.
I assume you mean by reported posts? not sure if the software supports this. People would of course have to report this. There are not that many reported posts anyway, let alone 5-10 reports for the same thread. If the Quarantine was set to just one report then this could then be open to abuse.
You must be in a lot of forums. I don;t see it in the other forums I visit. Admittedly, I only look at a couple of other forums. I do wonder why BF gets it and not those other forums. Perhaps it is a sign of BC's popularity on search engines?\ What I worry about is those ones which look innocuous. Just tried the link out of curiosity. Luckily I was using the work computer which blocked the site informing it was a malicious website.
Well, I'm used to be on other Forums. And I'm referring to non-Badminton Forums: cars, cameras, flashlights, tactical gear, other sports.
I noticed also.. ...those ad spams appeared *only* in forums which had high number of visitors/guests(so as to attract them), as not all of the sub-forums got bombarded with those ads...Hmm, i concur, it's a tricky one to deal with... I understand what jamesd20 mentioned earlier abt new members might abandon BC. I know this probably doesn't really sound "fair" to the new members trying to join but perhaps one way to "get rid of this" is for kwun or mods to start setting up a pre-posting filter. By that i mean, since the new signees are literally anonymous, for any new member(s) signing up and trying to post, their first 1 or 2 or 3 posts should initially go to kwun's or the mods basket for review, rather than straight to these forums. If those new posts don't get reviewed right away, then so be it. If they're deemed "appropriate" or "not-spams", then the mods & kwun can post them in here.
Yeah, that's one of the reasons I joined these forums. After reading through it for a few months I was very impressed with the overall mature atmosphere. It's definitely a huge improvement coming from such places as the World of Warcraft forums .
If you see a spam and it has NOT been removed, just PM one if us. Usually the title of the thread makes it pretty obvious.
guys, to help us, if you see a spam post in the forum, do the following: 1) do NOT reply to it. there is no use as they are probably robots anyway 2) report the post to us. when we get a complaint, it can be dealt with much quicker. we need your help to make the site better.
BF needs more moderators. Just comparing it to other forums I go, the others maintain better because they have more moderators and administrators to take care of matters.
