this might b a pointless question but i was wondering:rolleyes:

every gum sole on a badminton shoe has different type of treads like on a tyre.
do they aid in the performance of the shoe or are they merely cosmetic touches by the manufacturers?

Yes, for performance, to maximize traction.

since we're on the topic of gum soles, does it really matter if its gum sole or not? I noticed that the new badminton shoes don't use gum soles anymore, does it mean that it's not that significant anymore?

I don't think the material matters. The key is traction and I believe gum soles provide the best traction on indoor courts.
