AG/Joko seem to have problems with European pairs. They have now lost again in the early round....

I've noticed that too. They also haven't done well in the Superseries so far.

Hmmm..just my 2 cents..
...i haven't seen much of their games/matches, but i noticed when playing against European pairs, many INA MD pairs/players do have some difficulties. Mental/experience is one thing. But I think to have any success against those European players, one must be able to attack and kill off the shuttle right off @ the onset and/or @ the earliest chance(s) & control the net by minimizing lobbing/lifting the shuttles a lot. Doing the latter means basically one is exposing one's self to a lot of smashes, esp. playing against those tall & lanky Europeans....And it's even more of an adventure if one doesn't have enough defense to counter those..

I've seen them play against Clark/Blair and Eriksen/Lundgaard at the Copenhagen Masters - Riyadi/Gunawan won the matches but it's hard to define what their problems are. Basically, I've no idea why they lost the german and polish couple

Only thing i remember from their match was that, their playing level was just not up to par(as they mostly did lots of rallies with your usual lifts & smashes, not much variations). On top of that, they weren't consistent. Now, i don't know how much they've changed ever since that tourney, but in short, they didn't catch my attention...Anyways, IMO, whatever they are lacking, they have to learn to adapt and somewhat change their playing tactics, esp. when playing European or Asian pairs..

I've got a link here : http://www.mediafire.com/?2ymqyzyg1wn .
That is the final match in CPM '06.
I don't know how they played before at that time you saw them play, but variation is what I think they have to work on. Easier said than done, but they are really good with the flat play and also Joko does a very good job at the net, while Hendra smash' are good from the backline - but they need that extra consistensy to win their matches.

Hmm, true...
..IMO, those are keys when playing against European players/pairs..another aspect is shuttle placement(s)..(i'm mentioning all these cos i've been watching Tony Gunawan played live for sometimes now both against European as well as Asian pairs/players)..hehe

I'm in All England right now. Hendra AG is so nice. They lost early, but still went to watch some matches.. Hendra is good friends with Malaysian players like Zakry, Lin Woon Fui, Gan Teik Chai etc.
