i am a decent badminton player and to improve i think i need to add the flick serve to my game. i say this because when i play singles and i set up for a short serve my opponent can always tell that i am going to serve short. if i could unexpectedly flick the shuttlecock over their head i would be at a advantage. i have tried the flick serve but i just dont know how to do it. does anyone know the fundamentals of a flick serve and how to execute it. i am 16 years old 6'3 left handed many thanks
Basically, the flick serve is a foreward movement of the arm and a pronation (knuckles turning toward you) of the wrist. To get it to the back takes a lot of power and many years of practice, unfortunately. Put out your arm as if you were going to hit a short serve. Now imagine there is a short person standing directly in front of them... motion as if you were going to hit them under the chin with your knuckles. This is the same form as the flick serve. The power, primarily, should come from the wrist and forearm, and there should not be too much movement in the whole serve. The set-up is the same as the short serve and the execution is quite similar except for the upward snap, which gives the bird its high trajectory. I hope that helped.
Aye, I need to learn this, I screw up a lot when I try it sometimes it is okay but I don't hit it hard enough, a decent player could smash most of mine
A good flick serve must be virtually indistinguisable from the low backhand serve, the only difference is the use of the uncocking of the wrist, sharply, at the last split second before the point of impact. If you increase your forearm movement to get length, the flick becomes a giveaway and it even travels slower despite its bigger swing. Flick serve is exactly like the low backhand serve but requires more pure wrist (not forearm) flick.
