naah, beating LD in Thomas Cup was quite big, 2008 he has won Malaysia Open, Singapore Open and the Super Series Masters Finals.

Excluding OG, LD has 2008 only won China Open Super Series and Swiss open ?!? (on top of my head, maybe I have missed some tournament win??)

So apart from OG it his hard to argue LDs "supremacy" 2008.. :-)

LD on the other hand has failed to deliver lots of times this year.. just recently against CJ. He failed in all-england, korea open, Hong Kong open etc..(also quite big tournaments )..

success is about timing 2beer. LCW form peaked in TC. LOL, so what? the whole MAS team lost, he beat LD for a lost cause while LD got the TC medal. LD also won the thailand open in 2008, his last tournament before the OG.

National Service

All fit and able-bodied Singaporean men are enlisted into military service, or Full-Time National Service (NSF). It is compulsory for all said men who have reached 18 years of age and are not deferred for educational reasons.

Full-time national service (NSF) was initially three years for commissioned officers and two years for other ranks, but it was later changed to two years and six months for soldiers with the rank of Corporal or higher, and two years for those with the rank of Lance Corporal or lower. In June 2004, NSF was shortened to two years for all full-time national servicemen (NSFs), regardless of rank, due to changes in population demographics and manpower requirements. Upon completion of their NSF stint, servicemen will be considered as having reached their operationally-ready date (ORD) and will be known as operationally-ready national servicemen (NSmen). Most NSmen will have to go through a 10-year cycle of military training with their assigned NS unit. NSmen are called up annually for training, courses and physical fitness tests.


Training
All combatant troops go through a 3-month Basic Military Training (BMT), held either at the Basic Military Training Centre on the offshore island of Pulau Tekong, or at the various military units which directly accept mono-intake recruits. Recruits go through courses including field craft, basic jungle survival, camouflaging, operating their personal weapon and basic marksmanship. Non-mono-intake recruits are also assessed during BMT to spot potential officers and specialists, who are thereafter posted to the Officer Cadet School or the School of Infantry Specialists respectively. Other recruits are posted to various units or schools, where they may continue on specialised vocational training.

Due to limited space within Singapore's territorial land and waters, some training programmes and facilities are located overseas.

Yeah! China is really good in producing players from their military styled camp. I dont think democracy countries can follow their iron clad styles. Is a success that the china people has to earn through sacrificing their freedom.

As the theme of most discussion in BF, MAS players seem to lack discipline and mental focus (kkk, lcw, HH, etc). Maybe some china's communist style training would do good for them lol. I remembered back in the 1990's, BAM brought in some drill sergeants from the MAS police academy to work on their badminton player's discipline and mental strength. I guess those drills were too soft because nothing came out of it lol.

Yes, I didn't really count that tournament as it was kind of B-class tournament (apart from LD and Boonsak) as Bao, CJ, KJ, Gade, Park, Taufik, LCW, Sony, LHI, WCH, Chen Yu, Wacha, Chen Yu, Santoso, T.S. Lee, Chen Hong, Sato where all no-shows :-)

I am not arguing the 'success' of LD :-) .. Heck I love the guy!! But I am annnoyed when people don't give Lee Chong Wei, the credit he really deserves..Just ignoring and forgetting all the matches LD have lost :-)
(but I guess thats the beauty of being a true "fan".. you tend to remember the wins and forget the losses :-) taufik.. hint, hint )

I agree with this.. I don't think it is only a mental problem.. I think LCW control/defense agility is so good that no one except LD have an offense strong enough to rattle him (Taufik may be the exception, when he has been playing at the best of his abilities). And his net play att SS-f was OUTSTANDING!!

Looking at the SS finals, it seemed like LCW has improved his speed substantially though (at OG it was obvious that LD had greater speed than in pre-OG games, indicating good preparation...).

I hope we will se many battles between these two in 2009 And my guess is that LCW will hold on to the no.1 spot 2009

i have no problem of lcw being #1 since i know it was gained by LD taking some time off after the OG. WooHoo. LD doesn't have to prove he's no. 1 anymore, he hold the pole position for 2+ years straight already. He had won all the important titles that other MS players only dream about. If LCW fans want to compare lcw to LD, let see if LCW can hold the pole position for 2+ years, after that, we can talk about it again. Right now, LD tournament focus will be different than before the OG. For the next 3.5 years, china team focus will be the groomng the new MS for 2012, and yes, LCW (and PG, TH) will play an essential part of helping them to prepare for the 2012 OG.

i dont doubt your guess. I have said earlier that LD's goal is now different after the OG title. I'm sure his sponsorship, his popularity still be strong even if he drop to #2 or #3. LD vs LCW and LD vs TH duel will be strong regardless of their ranking, until they retired.

After the OG, LD took some time off.
OK, let see who have won titles between OG til now:
simon santoso, TH, PG twice, SDK twice, CJ, Tedjono, and LCW from SS Master. There were no clear 2nd best. Yes, lcw is ranked #1 but shouldn't he had won more?? Even PG, a player that lcw quashed in the SS Master, PG had won twice after the OG to end of 2008.
