A Very Warm Welcome our new friend!

I'm sure you will be very useful here since from time to time we have lots of questions from members who are suffering from sports injuries.

I shall begin with an elbow injury question first.

For more than 7 years now, I have been suffering from a pain at my right elbow, my racket holding hand. This happened after a club championship when I must have over exerted myself. The next morning I could not even lift my arm to comb my hair. Some said it is tennis elbow but it has lasted for just too long as everytime I finilshed a game, the pain came back the next day.

Not too long ago, on the advice of another badminton player who suffered more or less the same injury, I started pressing my right forearm towards my right shoulder with some force. For quite some time now, I can't touch my right shoulder with my fingers when I lift my upper arm sideways. I can do this easily with my left hand. With regular practice I'm able to bring my right lower and upper arms closer together but there seems to be something in the elbow joint which prevents me from touching my right shoulder without pain at the elbow joint.

What could be the problem apart from tennis elbow? Can you think of any other exercise that may help to bring back normalcy to my right elbow? Is the nerve playing tricks as well? I have gone to the Traditional Chinese sinseh who drew out some blood from my elbow joint area. It helped but not entirely. The pain still persisted and my elbow joint still cannot close 100%.

There could ba alot of sources for your pain, musles/ tendons (tennis elbow), ligament problems causing instabitlity or bone problems (Traumatic arthritis etc) but I highly doubt it is comming from your nerves. If you say that there is lack of range of motion in your elbow I would suggest you get an xray and consult your local orthopedic MD, you might have a bony or cartilage blocking your motion, with regards to the pain, try resting it for 2 weeks as most badminton/ sport injuries are overuse injuries these tend to sbside with plain rest. hope this helps. :)

Thank you. I think I should take your advice to go for an x-ray first.

    Sore Foot

Hi, thanks for the offer of injury help / advice.

I have been suffering from a sore foot after playing. It is under the ball of my foot/ankle, and really hurts in the moring - I have difficulty walking when I get up. It eases during the day, but if I walk around too much it starts to hurt again. I'm OK on the second day after playing. I have tried wearing an ankle support & extra cushioning in my shoes (they are good quality / fairly new Yonex ones) - these help, as does stretching & exercising. Could it be plantar fascitis? Could the problem be caused by my shoes? I have been playing for years, and only just (last few months) had this problem.

Hi, I'm relatively new here too!

Glad to know of your participation! I have a strong feeling many are going to start asking medical questions to you, or perhaps a personal thread/forum devoted to queries directed at you. :p Ummm, ok that was a little bit too far-fetched. :)

From your history, it really sounds like plantar fascitis, maybe a change in shoe, badminton or your work shoe may have triggered it. A big factor is constant pounding from badminton. Its hard for me to advise you to stop playing even for two weeks cause I know most of us wont comply, but rest from play would definitely help. I suggest you go to a Physical therapist and teach you the proper stretching and strengthening for your foot. If exercises and rest dont work, there are night splints, steroids, antiinflamatory medications and your last option is surgery ( but rarely do we do it) cause PF almost always responds to these conservative measures.
    hope I helped. :)

    Thanks for your advice.

I suspect its a change in my shoes. Whilst I bought a top-spec pair, I know from my running days that a good shoe is not good for everyone.

And you are right, stopping playing is not realistic - I took 2 weeks off at christmas / new year and it didn't make any difference - so I'm playing on and suffering! :)
