Title: Chen Hong: Retirement is just a matter of paperwork; Not ruling out going to Taiwan.

    English Translation

Here it is, I hope I did ok. It's my first translation. =)

182 cm tall represents a perfect athlete’s body, a handsome face showing confidence and peace. When Chen Hong is standing in front of you in plain clothes, it’s hard to relate him to a 30 year old soon to be retired veteran. Our reporter caught up with Chen in Beijing whom just came back from Korea Open. After the Malaysian’s pull out and Korea’s Open first round lost, he faces the questions from reporters for the first time, talking about the past and the future.

Korea is the last international tournament.

Reporter: When did you get back, and did you come back alone?
CH: I arrived on the 26th 4pm. Those of us that lost also came back.
R: With your skills, why did you lose in the first round in Korea Open?
CH: Win or lose, isn’t it the same to me? What is the difference between losing in the first round and reaching the final? Winning and losing is not important to me anymore. Ranking is also not important.
R: Korea is your last tournament?
CH: Yes, it should be my last international tournament. I will participate in some local tournaments, coaching, maybe some provincial tournaments. I am looking forward to enjoy badminton, I am tired of competition and stressful badminton. I love badminton, anywhere in the world, I can’t leave badminton. Retirement is just a matter of paperwork now.
R: What did you do these couple of days in Beijing? Still in training?
CH: I just came back from the gym, just to keep in shape and to gather some personal belongings.
R: Has the application to retire been approved yet? Are they waiting for the team to finish the KO?
CH: It hasn’t been approved yet, only some procedures left.
R: If you have children in the future, will you let them play badminton?
CH: I will respect their choices, and depends on their hobby.
R: Can you talk about the most important people in your badminton career?
CH: My dad has the most impact during the early days of my career. Then there are many coaches, their care have helped a lot. My wife’s thoughts has a lot of impact on me nowadays, but not to say it has changed me.

Not ruling out going to Taiwan.
R: Can you talk about LYB?
CH: Same, I mentioned that I have many coaches that has been very caring.
R: Isn’t it not too hard to maintain your current condition until 2008 Olympics? Zhang Ling is 30 yrs old and has done the same.
CH: To a veteran, there is a lot of outside influence, it’s hard to guarantee. Youngster joining the Olympics for training and experience, but to a veteran, it’s a waste of opportunity to retire after the Olympics, don’t you think? I was young once, I understand coach’s thinking, but I don’t agree to it. Zhang Ling is playing at 30, but what competition does she have? In men singles there are Taufik, Gade, LCW, Lee Hyun II, and many other high level players. Not to mention there are 5 or 6 teammates there are around the same level. To a 30 year old athlete, stamina, recovery, and injury are things that have to be overcome.
R: Are you going to work in Fujian after retirement?
CH: Thanks of the management for entrusting me this position, thus resolving my worries. But if I can choose, I would do something more practical, something that can utilize my value as an athlete, such as being a coach, passing on my knowledge to the next generation.
R: Have you done anything related to that?
CH: Lately just solving my living problem, my wife is living in Taiwan. We will have to deal with separation if I stay in Fujian. I have been playing tournaments for a year, so I didn’t have much time to deal with such issues. I currently don’t have a house in Fujian, so there are many living problems still to be resolved.
R: Is it possible to go to Taiwan? Your wife has a job there too.
CH: I can’t rule out that possibility, no matter what, I look forward to my new life. But there will be a lot of choices that I will have to consider.

Chen Hong's tone seems to indicate that he is a bit burned out and he wants to have a change in his life. his marriage also contributed to that thinking.

wish him luck with his immediate issues as well as luck for the longer term future, wherever he may end up!

My Fujianese friends say that in Fujian if a man is still single after he passes the age of 30, he will find it very difficult to find any girl who will marry him.

Thanks for the article & translation...

...Shiryu, thanks for sharing the article and doing double-task(w/the translation);) ...Yah, life after pro badminton...CHN squad will surely miss a great & talented player like CH, but i guess that's just reality..Wish him and his new bride to settle down together soon & have a happy future together..:)
*Btw, if he & his wife want to come to U.S. and make coaching as their next careers, we'd gladly accept them(i'm sure places like NorCal or East Coast/N.Y. area can use their talents)...hehe;) :D

He is still good enough to be the #2 player in badminton power houses like Indonesia, Malaysia and Denmark, and #1 player in the rest of the world. Life is really not that easy in Chinese badminton team.

Somehow, to me, CH sounds like to "be real", which seems he might seeking chances to use his skill (playing or coaching) to earn some better living. Therefore, won't be surprised to see he moves to another nation or so, but highly not TW (we know the reason, right?), though.

It is sad hearing the news and seeing one of the best player in the world walking off the stage.

But wish him luck and all the best in the future with his new marriage!

CH was born on the 28 November 1979 so is now 27 years old.

Why do people (and actually himself too) refer to him as a 30 year old? although I got his points for retiring, I don't see why he undrestimates himself so much.. Some players would actually reach their peak form at 27 (youth plus good experience). Apparently this is not an option for a chinese MS player..

    well i think i'm just angry/sad i won't see him around anymore...

CH's retirement was so suddenly. LYB must be disappointed because nothing he can do to stop CH. Although, CHN still has LD-BCL-CJ-CY but undoubtedly without CH, it can reduce CHN MS power automatically. CH can beat current all top-players and for this reason LYB wants CH keep stay in national squad.

I'm agree about CH's statement that he and Zhang Ning are totally different. Competition in MS is far tighter than WS so age/stamina holding urgent role to continue career as an athlete. And it's wise decision from CH to quit.

LYB probably will release new youngster to fill MS back-up in several tourneys outside SuperSeries. We'll see who are they in next couple of months?

Maybe it's difficult thing to decide for CH but life must go on - time to say goodbye!

I 'm seriously gonna miss him. After he announced his retirement, I was hoping to see him play one more time. Pity!!! Though it is quite an odd time to retire, in the beginning of 2007. All the best!!

I really respect Chen Hong. Things like this: " R: If you have children in the future, will you let them play badminton?
CH: I will respect their choices, and depends on their hobby."

It's going to be sad to see him go... I guess he's had enough of it though and wants to settle down now. Good luck Chen Hong and if you do have any badminton kids I will look forward to seeing them play in the future :p.

This is so not true. A man as successful as CH is hot anywhere in China even he's 40. However, a woman as successful as GL might have some difficulty finding a good match after she passes 30.
