Go get ‘em, Rexy tells the women
    By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: The disappointing start to the year has resulted in the top national women’s doubles pair of Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui requesting extra hours in training to spar with the men. And they began the first of a 30-minute punishing session against five men – Chan Chong Ming, Gan Teik Chai, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Tan Bin Shen and Ong Soon Hock – under the watchful eyes of coach Rexy Mainaky at the Gymnasium II in Bukit Jalil here yesterday.

The men pushed the two women all over the court and bombarded them with smashes. They even heckled them along the way.

    And Rexy urged them on.

“Come on, girls. Stand up to their challenges. Jeer at them in return if you hit a good shot. Don’t let them intimidate you. Be alert all the time,” he called out to them.
It is the first time that this arrangement has been made in an effort to strengthen the women’s doubles players. This session will be carried out regularly.
Pei Tty believes that going the extra mile will help them keep pace with the top pairs from China, South Korea and Japan.
“It was frustrating in the Malaysian and Korean Opens. I know both of us will have to do something extra if we want to be up there among the best. I asked Rexy whether we could try it out and he has agreed,” said Pei Tty.
“It will be taxing for us because it is an additional session immediately after our routine session. But it will benefit us greatly.”
They usually attend their morning training session under coach Cheah Soon Kit from 8am-11am.
Pei Tty-Eei Hui were eliminated in the first round of the opening two legs of the inaugural Super Series. At the Malaysian Open two weeks ago, they lost to Indonesians Vita Marissa-Polii Gresya and in the just concluded Korean Open, they were beaten by Japan’s Kumiko Ogura-Reiko Shiota.
Pei Tty and Eei Hui now hope to bounce back strongly in the All-England in Birmingham from March 6-11.
“In the Korean Open, the Japanese were superior in power and speed. We have to train with the men to increase our speed,” she said. “In fact, I think all the other countries like China, South Korea started doing this many years ago. Hopefully, this will take our game to another level.”
Rexy said the arrangement was made possible after an agreement with Soon Kit, who had requested to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on many occasions for joint sparring sessions.
“There is nothing for the men to lose. It will be part of the daily workout for them,” said Rexy.
After observing the duo’s movement on the court yesterday, Rexy said: “Eei Hui needs to improve on her footwork. Her legs are not strong. Pei Tty is stronger but she tends to move slower to the net. “But the session will be good for them. They are the best among the women players. Now, they will have to keep pace with the men and it will make them stronger as a pair.”

    ya i agree w yuqiu
from d star, it seems tat soon kit had requested 4 d sparring many times but only now they hav aprrove it.
maybe they did it after all MAS WD lost in 1st round of MO n KO except 4 Lim/Joanne (KLRC) in MO.
it seems tat MAS women department gets less attention compare 2 d men.
nway this is a good start n hope tat things will be better
