So for those of us that remember the five games to 7 points, it was just a complete fiasco. Completely ruined badminton, in my mind, I'm glad they got that straightened out. But I've realized after the tournament this weekend, that myself and most other players do not get tired in any substantial way until during the third game. Today in finals I played a girl I've come up against perhaps ten times in the past few years in finals, and under the old system we'd have incredible battles of willpower and fitness that lasted an extremely long time. The two times we've faced off with the 21 point system, it's been luck that determined the outcome of the match... a few net rolls here, a bird dropping on the outer edge of the back line there, a lucky shank every once in awhile. That is really all the difference between us, when before it used to be who could outlast and play consistently well over time. Thus, I think with 21 rally-point, it should be best of five. After all, look at other major sports, racquets and otherwise. Tennis matches go on for hours. Squash is best of five games to 9, but it's not rally point. Basketball, hockey, soccer... all timed games, the time being of very long duration. In my experience so far, a match to 21 passes by in no time at all. I have nothing against rally point to 21... I like it, but I think that three games is too short. It really removes a lot of cardio from the game, and thus a lot of dynamic. Tell me how you weigh in on this.
I think I'd die if I had to play a close 5 game match . Personally I like the current system (I was originally against it though). It doesn't seem to drag on as it sometimes used to. Of course I'm rather unfit so I'm a bit biased , but yeah I could never last out a 5 game match and if I could, by the end of it my shots would be so useless and weak that I think the outcome would be (in my case) more a question of fitness and stamina than skill.
Yes, I did mention the idea of BO5 in the other old vs new scoring system thread. Based on what I've seen so far, a 5 game match with all close scores (30-29) might last maybe 2 1/2 hours or 3 hours. But that rarely happens...
If goes to 5 sets, I would say, go either 15 rally instead of 21 (deuce max to 20), or remain 21 rally, but reduce the max of deuce to 25 instead of 30. Or, remain with 3 sets, but give it 25 instead of 21?
All great, viable alternatives, I like those. I just feel that the current system really eliminates the cardio aspect. Badminton is one of the toughest games out there... you need to be operating at 100% with regards to speed, consistency, accuracy, strength, mental toughness, strategy, and stamina. And of course it's so hard because you don't have teammates who can cover your flaws and work off your strengths. The current system kind of takes out stamina, which I'm sure many people love, but I'm a stamina player, so I feel cheated. Although, I did vote for the NSS in that poll because I feel that it promotes greater consistency and accuracy, and mental toughness FOR SURE.
With the reduced the duration of the game, there are other things I see might effect the outcome. I participated in several local tournaments, and I found the NSS greatly favorite the "home" players. Now, the court conditions (light, lines, floor, wind, etc) all playing bigger roles, as the "visitors" won't get enough time to get used to the new environment. Several mistakes here and there, you are down a set already. Therefore, the great "come back" might be even harder to apply. Never to metion, many players tend to play too conservatively, therefore, many "show" moves are harder and harder to be spotted.
That's a good point. I think it could be a little longer as I do feel a 2 game match often feels a little too quick. I think 5 to 21 may be a bit much though. Especially for me... Although I have played 2 3 game matches in a row (6 games), I was completely worn out after that, and neither of us could really keep up in the last couple of games.
Could anyone explain to me the new scoring system or give me a link to a thread explaining it? I know of the 15 point one, but havent heard of this 21 point one.

ah thx for the link. So the point scoring is similiar to volleyball. I wonder if our highschool league will be playing with this new system or still use the old system. hm...
