Well, I never personally had a shoulder injury but when my arms feel like noodles after push ups and weight training (Wrist curls etc.), I usually just work on footwork, do some sit-ups and my work my legs (Lunges and squats) and do nothing else that involves using the affected area, for you in this case, it's your shoulder. So avoid using your shoulder.

I injured my shoulder as well, 3 months ago, and it still has not healed so I can feel your pain.

Take it easy, let it heal and yes, work on footwork and other shots like net drops, etc...

    Rotator Cuff Injury

Good to stay with footwork. You would probably do better without overhead skills for a week or two. You need to have your shoulder assessed to ensure that there is no tendon tear or impingement (tissues getting pinched together).

You could ice for 15-20 minutes every 4 hourly after training. Your physiotherapist / trainer could give you some theraband exercises.

What kind of injury do you have? 3 months is a really long time for muscle strain so i guess is a torn?

Probably a minor tear. I couldn't raise my arm above my head without pain for about a month. It's much better now.

Going to a specialist on Monday.

    Shoulder Injury

I sustained a shoulder injury for a few months as well. I normally play on Thursday and Sunday at my club for 3 hours each night. My shoulder hurts the next morning and the pain disappears after 2 to 3 days rest. So I ignored the pain and continued to play. It got worse last month. I experienced pain during my game, I lost strength when my shoulder hurts. I saw a physio and got a scan. The radiologist said I have supraspinatus tendinosis- It means one of the tendon which joins my muscle to the bone in my shoulder thickened and weakened. The thickening of the tendon causes impingement in the rotator cuff.

Now, I am resting and do some very light exercise. The tendon needs to heal before I can do any strengthening exercises such as internal and external rotations.

Do not take your injury lightly, especially for those who have been playing for a long time and play hard. See a physio and rest until your shoulder heals completely.

    Subacromial Impingement

Sounds like you probably also have an impingement on top of a possible tendon partial tear. Good to do an Ultrasound scan to ascertain extent of damage. Do not go for a quick fix steroid injection.

Always remember to warm-up adequately before attempting smashes. You could also do some conditioning exercises in case of muscle imbalance. You definitely need to see your specialist.

Sportsdoc, what are the shortfalls of using steroid or cortisone to treat tendinosis.

Could fish oil and glucosamine sulfate make the healing of tendons faster. Your advice is much appreciated.

Cortisone injections should only be reserved for tendons if there is no evidence of tear. It should be done by doctors who are familiar with the procedure. Possible complications include rupture of the tendon, weakening of the tendon, thinning of the adjacent skin.

Glucosamine & Fish oils generally does not have much evidence in tendon healing.

    RICE Treatment

Kindly refer to my blog for the advice on the duration and frequency of treatment with ice. I would not suggest that you ice for more than two days once the inflammation has resolved.

Your shoulder likely hurts because you aren't using proper overhead-swinging technique.

Not necessarily true. Inadequate warm-up or overuse are likely as well.
