hey guys, i was playing a match against my fellow training friend yesterday and i lost 21-17 19-21 21-14. At the end he said that the reason for my defeat was that i wasnt fast enough and that i should start to learn the bounce start just before he hits the shot. Is it true that it helps you get to shots dramatically faster? Also what is the best way to start to be able to incorparate it into my game quickly?

yes, hopping (split step) just before your opponent hits the shot really helps with your speed and anticipation.
to incorporate it into my game, i usually skip rope since the movements are similar.

It's funny - I've heard in a couple of places that the hop should be avoided, while others claim it to be useful.

the hop (split step) is a very important part of badminton. if you look at all professional badminton players, they all some way or another use the hop (split step) it makes moving around the court much easier.

i think it's rather weird for someone to say that the split step should be avoided when it's such a crucial part of footwork.

From what I've noticed, there is a slight difference between split stepping and pre loading. Split stepping as far as I kno is more of a tennis thing where a longer distance is needed to be covered. "pre loading" the legs however is similar, but is done without the full bounce, kinda like bouncing in your shoes.

if you put pressure on your opponent and now have enough time a pre-loading jump is used, even if you havent that much time you can execute a jump but it will be only little
