Klipper M140 Clamp problem

Hi guys,

I am new at stringing. When I tried to string a raquect with my Klipper M140 and Yonex BG 66 today (18 lb x 20 lb, according to the coversion chart) , I started following the instructions in their manual. For some reason, the string slipped in the clamp, it was like the clamp was not able to hold the string tightly and the coat of the string got some damage.

I heard that Klipper clamps may not be able to work on thin strings, is BG 66 too thin? Or I did something wrong? Do I have to buy new clamps?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The default clamps from Klipper is very narrow and screw adjust. Therefore, with thin string, it will have some trouble to hold tight if tension is more than 22 or 23lb. However, if you over tighten the screws, u might damage the string.

Try to get Yonex or HQ (seems only perfect from main, a bit trouble for cross) flying clamps. Those spring ones are much better.

I may probably only string at around 20 lb. Can I get around this by tighten the screws a little bit?

But I think you are right, I will try to get a HQ when my budget is not so tight.

screw adjusted clamps allow some slippage. hi-qua flying clamps are superb! no need to adjust. just clamp and unclamp.

Some miscellaneous comments:

+Get a starting clamp

+Start with two fly clamps

+Yes, Hi Qua Fly Clamps are great, better than the Yonex IMHO.

BG66 is too thin and it will slip without any mod to the clamp.
If you need to string your racquet ASAP, here is what I did to mod my clamps.

Disassamble the clamp. Get a sand paper/cloth higher than 600 grid (or the one that came with) Sand the black center in X pattern. This will creat a rough surface. Reassemble the clamp again and place 1 business card in each side. Tighten the screw so the clamp just touch the business card and you can still pull out the card with little force. It should be enough to hold BG66 @23lb. Get a good clamp from HiQua ASAP.

do you really need the starting clamp? cos i pre-string the racket. then i tie the main knot and start tension from one end to the other and do the crosses from bottom to top. this way i only need 1 flying clamp but i use two to minimize tension loss.

If you're tying a knot on the mains, then you're stringing from left to right or right to left. If that's the case, you don't need it. But I would recommend stringing from the middle. It's better for the racket.

Somehow, I think HQ clamp's middle piece is too narrow. Therefore, it's perfect for mains, but for crosses, it drags string to be a bit "curved". It's rather difficult to use for crosses with larger gaps, such as some Prince Y shape rackets, or Yonex Swing Powers.

I don't string that many of those mentioned rackets. Regardless, I don't have a problem with the HQ Clamps. They are fine for me.

What should I do with the Kilpper clamps after I get two HQ clamps?
Can I use still use them sometimes? It is not a good idea to let them just sit there.

Do a search for the "4 clamps" method by tanpeek. The Klipper clamps can be the "bonus" clamp under certain situation, such as "hard to reach" (last cross, etc) areas.
